Jennifer Lawrence has reportedly dropped out of portraying disgraced tech CEO Elizabeth Holmes in the upcoming movie Bad Blood, after deciding that Amanda Seyfried had already definitely done the role in the Hulu series The Dropout. The news first broke via a Tweet from the New York Times report Kyle Buchanan, who stated that Jennifer Lawrence had revealed the news to him during an interview. While Lawrence herself has not yet publicly commented on the matter, multiple sources (including Yahoo and CNN) are reporting she has left the project.

Bad Blood was announced to star Jennifer Lawrence as Elizabeth Holmes back in December of 2021; the film is set to be directed by Academy Award-winner Adam McKay, who previously worked with Lawrence on the ensemble dark comedy Don’t Look Up. The film (which was released via Netflix) also starred Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, Meryl Streep, Timothée Chalamet, and many others. However, it seems Jennifer Lawrence is not continuing the collaboration with McKay, at least for this particular film.

Amanda Seyfried in The Dropout

Jennifer Lawrence seems to have been scared off from Bad Blood by the acclaimed performance by Amanda Seyfried in The Dropout, though it might be more charitable to say that she recognized the quality of her contemporary’s acting. The Dropout was released on Hulu in March to wide acclaim, eventually being nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards. Amanda Seyfried herself won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie for the eight-episode series, which also starred Naveen Andrews, William H. Macy, Kurtwood Smith, and Sam Waterston.

Jennifer Lawrence first came to widespread attention as the lead of the immensely popular Hunger Games franchise, along with the 2011 revival of the Fox X-Men series, and winning an Academy Award for the David O. Russell film Silver Linings Playbook. In more recent years, she has said that she is less interested in franchise-driven film work, which makes more idiosyncratic films like Don’t Look Up and Bad Blood a bit more logical.

Her most recent film is the war drama Causeway, from writer-director Lila Neugebauer, in which Jennifer Lawrence portrays an Afghanistan war veteran dealing with a traumatic brain injury and the adjustment to returning to civilian life. The film also co-stars Brian Tyree Henry, Linda Emond, and Stephen McKinley Henderson. Causeway has been receiving positive reviews, currently holding 86% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Both Bad Blood and The Dropout are centered around Elizabeth Holmes as the founder of the biotechnology company Theranos, which claimed to be developing revolutionary new methods and devices to medically analyze blood. At one point, Elizabeth Holmes was declared to be the youngest self-made female billionaire in America, and widely considered one of the most influential people in her field. However, a series of investigative articles on Theranos by journalist John Carreyrou caused Holmes’ claims to crumble and eventually led to Holmes being convicted of fraud and conspiracy in federal court.

Now that Jennifer Lawrence seems not to be playing Elizabeth Holmes, her next upcoming film is the dark comedy No Hard Feelings, which is scheduled to be released in June of 2023.
