Board games have captured the attention and fascination of audiences, gameplayers, and anyone suffering from mass amounts of boredom since ancient times, but recently they have jumped ship to other mediums like books, movies, and more. Some of the most classic examples are movies made from the likes of Clue with Tim Curry, Battleship with Taylor Kitsch and Liam Neeson, and Dungeons and Dragons with Jeremy Irons. According to Comic Book, one of the rarest is a new decision to turn one of the most famous board games of all time into a book series, CATAN.
According to the report, Klaus Teuber, the creator of the game, formerly known as Settlers of CATAN, has announced that he is developing a trilogy of novels to explain the backstory of the games and narratively develop the history of the city. The synopsis of the books read as taking place in Norway in 860. Half-brothers Thorolf, Yngvi, and Digur save the daughters of the Viking prince Halldor and help them to escape. Halldor roams through the territory in search of them, pillaging and banishing them.
Running out of places to hide, the brothers, along with settlers willing to move on, set out for new shores and. After an adventurous sea voyage, they reach Catan, known as the land of the sun. Will the brothers be able to stand together and face the immense challenges of their new land, or will it divide them?
CATAN has been one of the most popular and most beloved board games in the world since its conception in 1995. The game players represent settlers on the island of Catan, working to establish their own place in the land. Players work to build settlements, cities, and roads as they develop their ground on the island of Catan. The game board is composed of hexagonal tiles of different land types with different artwork and colors representing the island, laid out randomly at the beginning of each game.
Newer editions of the game began to suggest a uniform layout in their manual, which used computer simulations to prove reasonably fair and more manageable for beginners to figure out. This allows them to find their footing in the game before switching it up. Now that the game is going to be made into a trilogy of books chronicling the island’s history and how it came to be, there is a reasonable expectation that the novels (assuming they see any level of success) will also lead to adaptations to the screen as well.
Who wouldn’t want to watch a series or trilogy of movies based on wayfaring travelers searching for a new home outside the grip of an evil monarch looking to enslave the people? It’s not hard to imagine a series like The Witcher, with a star like Henry Cavill or Chris Hemsworth anchoring a storyline, or a franchise of movies like The Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter ; in any case, now that the most popular board game is jumping to a new medium, it is only a matter of time before we see CATAN everywhere else.
