James Gunn has ascended to co-CEO of DC Studios, and this promises new ideas from the studio. Is a crossover with Scooby-Doo and the DC Universe among the stories to be proposed? We Got This Covered shows a like from the director on a tweet showing the Scooby Gang in an old cartoon with Batman and Robin, having unmasked the Joker and the Penguin.

The Scooby Gang has solved mysteries alongside many celebrities in cartoons from the 60s, 70s, and 80s, including the Harlem Globetrotters, Laurel and Hardy, and characters from the DC Universe such as Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman.

The picture in the tweet shows one such episode, which featured Scooby-Doo and friends helping the superheroes bring DC Universe villains to justice. This indicates that a movie plot with both sets of characters already has a precedent that many adults remember fondly from childhood.

James Gunn wrote the scripts for the two live-action Scooby-Doo movies in the early 2000s and recently hinted that he could get a Scooby 3 into production, even before he was given his status at DC Studios. Since then, he has directed Marvel Cinematic Universe Guardians of the Galaxy properties, which include three movies and the upcoming holiday special. Now, he has taken all that experience over to DC Studios, formerly DC Films, alongside producer Peter Safran.

Scooby-Doo is seeing a major resurgence, with new movies and shows making a lot of buzz in entertainment right now. Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo premiered on October 4 and revealed that Velma is gay, an idea Gunn pushed for when he wrote the scripts for the live-action films. Mindy Kaling is also making an animated series that shows audiences new versions of the characters, including the use of Shaggy’s obscure given name.

What makes the liked tweet so newsworthy is that it was suggested by another entertainment insider. Dan Slott is a Marvel Comics writer, so he’s used to coming up with outrageous adventures for superheroes. Knowing James Gunn’s history with Scooby-Doo, he tagged the director in the tweet with the picture and asked if Gunn could now make it happen.

When James Gunn liked the tweet, Dan Slott made sure to retweet a picture with the like showing. This interaction has generated some rumors that maybe James Gunn is considering crossing Scooby-Doo with the DC Universe. However, a like on Twitter is not a concrete announcement, and it is possible that James Gunn was simply enjoying a laugh at a funny tweet.

However, Gunn is uniquely poised to make such a movie happen, and it is always possible that the buzz generated by a like on Twitter could result in a movie being made. After all, a new generation is being introduced to both Scooby-Doo and the DC Universe through new content, and their parents and grandparents grew up watching the old crossover episodes. This is a very wide audience to market to, with interest in such a project already established.

Will Scooby-Doo get to meet the DC Universe? We’ll just have to wait and see!
