Matthew Perry has apologized after comments about Keanu Reeves in his upcoming memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing caused some controversy. The book includes more than a handful of revelations from the Friends alum, but the most shocking is a pair of seemingly out-of-nowhere digs at the Matrix star. “I’m actually a big fan of Keanu,” the statement via Deadline reads.

“I just chose a random name, my mistake. I apologize. I should have used my own name instead.” While Matthew Perry’s statement doesn’t address Keanu Reeves directly, it may soften the strangeness of the situation.

Especially since the idea that the John Wick star’s name was picked at random seems odd. Reeves is singled out several times in the book as an actor who “still walks among us” even as “the original thinkers like River Phoenix and Heath Ledger die.” However, The Whole Nine Yards star did not elaborate on its significance.

Throughout his book, Matthew Perry repeatedly expresses a similar eerie sentiment about Keanu Reeves, who was close friends with River Phoenix. The troubled Friends alum also became friends with the deceased star after the pair worked on 1988’s A Night in the Life of Jimmy Reardon together. Five years later, Phoenix died from an overdose of cocaine and heroin in front of the Viper Room.

“River was a beautiful man inside and out and too beautiful for this world, it turned out.” he wrote. Matthew Perry takes another shot at Keanu Reeve when recalling his reaction to Chris Farley’s death. “I punched a hole through Jennifer Aniston’s dressing room wall when I found out,” he wrote.

Then, he randomly adds, “Keanu Reeves walks among us.” Perry previously worked with the Saturday Night Live star in Almost Heroes with Chris Farley in 1988, Page Six reports. Matthew Perry’s comments about Keanu Reeves are just the latest startling revelations from the book.

Last week an excerpt detailed a time in 2018 when the actor’s colon burst, due to his opioid addiction. The incident resulted in the 53-year-old needing to be put on life support. Earlier this week, the actor also described a scenario in which his heart stopped for five minutes after doctors, who didn’t know he’d been abusing pain medication, gave him propofol before surgery.

Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing is currently available for pre-order and will be released worldwide on November 1st. Other things discussed in Matthew Perry’s book that don’t include digs at Keanu Reeves are his many attempts at staying sober. In one instance, he even admits to spending approximately $9 million to get clean.

Away from Matthew Perry’s book, Keanu Reeves is quietly promoting his graphic novel series called BRZRKR. Known for playing tough guys on screen, the Matrix actor is one of the nicest people in the entertainment industry. But like any superhero, the actor does his good deeds away from the cameras.

Still, stories about his kindness have surfaced over the years, from cute fan interactions to his charitable efforts. So it’s really strange that he’d be a target for cheap shots.
