James Gunn is about to make the holidays a whole lot happier with The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. The trailer is making its way through social media and it features Cosmo the Spacedog, plenty of Christmas decor, and Drax and Mantis heading to Earth to kidnap Kevin Bacon for Peter Quill’s Christmas present. According to the trailer, we can start streaming the Guardians holiday special on Disney+ on November 25.
Along with Kevin Bacon, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special will also star Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Dave Bautista, and Sean Gunn. James Gunn returns to write and direct one last time before finishing his work on the MCU’s Guardians team with Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The Guardians holiday special will follow the upcoming release of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever on November 11 and wrap up the fourth phase of the MCU.
The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is the second holiday special this year, following the Halloween special Werewolf by Night. Disney seems to have plans for more specials, especially after the critical success of Werewolf by Night, with specials based on Nova and the Silver Surfer reportedly in the works. If Werewolf by Night was able to find success despite the lack of name recognition, there’s little doubt that the Guardians holiday special will be a hit on the streaming platform.
Reportedly, The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special takes place between the events of Thor: Love and Thunder and the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. That means we likely shouldn’t expect to be seeing any of Chris Hemsworth’s Thor since he left the team and it’ll be more of a solo Guardians adventure. For those looking forward to the third feature-length film in the Guardians trilogy, it does seem like the Guardians holiday special will be essential viewing.
We have a much longer wait for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, as it’s not expected to come out until May 5, 2023. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will bring the whole team back together as well as some new, anticipated faces. The most notable additions to the cast are Chukwudi Iwuji as The High Evolutionary and Will Poulter as the long-awaited MCU debut of Adam Warlock.
While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will surely have plenty of that signature James Gunn humor, it seems like the Guardians holiday special will be a much more light-hearted affair than the final entry to Gunn’s Guardians trilogy. Plus, it’s never bad to get more superhero content from Gunn. Now that he’s working on the other side of the aisle at DC, there’s going to be plenty more content to come from him.
While we wait for the Guardians holiday special we have the aforementioned Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to look forward to in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, She-Hulk and Werewolf by Night are streaming on Disney+. We also got a double dose of trailers this week with Marvel releasing the trailer for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, so make sure to check that out too.
