Is Universal Studios Hollywood closing down its Revenge of the Mummy – The Ride? Sources tell Inside the Magic that signs have appeared around the popular dark coaster that claim it is being refurbished, with no dates or timeline for the endeavor. This has given rise to rumors that the park is dismantling the ride or replacing it with another.
Universal Studios has three parks that feature Revenge of the Mummy – The Ride. There is one in Singapore and one in Orlando, in addition to the one in Hollywood. The Orlando ride was shut down over the winter for refurbishment to its software.
The ride, based on The Mummy franchise starring Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, was developed in 2002 and opened in Orlando and Hollywood in 2004. It is an indoor ride in which passengers are taken through a pre-determined route, during which they witness scenes created by animatronics, special effects, animation, and music. Other rides were closed down to make room for Revenge of the Mummy, namely Kongfrontation in Orlando and E.T. Adventure in Hollywood.
The speculation surrounding Revenge of the Mummy in Hollywood comes from rumors that a new ride might replace it. Likely candidates include a Donkey Kong ride from Universal’s Epic Universe or a ride dedicated to the Fast and the Furious franchise. The Fast and the Furious ride is in another location, but its opening may close down Revenge of the Mummy.
Universal Studios Hollywood has yet to make a formal announcement, so there may yet be hope for Revenge of the Mummy in Hollywood. At this time, the ride is still open and has a substantial wait time to board, an indication of how popular it is among park attendees. When the Orlando installation was closed in January for its refurbishment, that ride had seen some 100 million trains depart for the Egyptian abyss.
The source of the rumor is a Twitter account called Universal Core, which shares updates about proposed Universal Studios plans. The account also claims that the demolition was supposed to take place in 2020, but was delayed by the Covid-19 pandemic. It also claims that the alleged dismantling will take place in 2023, so it is unknown if the refurbishment will happen or if it will be replaced.
It is important to note that this is only a rumor and that no confirmation has been established. In fact, many park attendees have taken to social media to point out that the Hollywood ride is still operational and as popular as ever. Counter-arguments to the claim point out that the Fast and the Furious ride is already built and that Epic Universe has its own space.
With no comments from official sources, it is hard to say what will actually become of the popular ride. Many fans will be disappointed if it shuts down, as it is one of the most popular rides at Universal Studios. If the rumors are true, then hopefully the new ride will be just as exciting and entertaining for riders who will miss the Revenge of the Mummy – The Ride.
