The young dramedy As We See It has been canceled at Amazon Studios, with only the 8 episodes of its first season to appear on the streamer. Variety confirmed the cancellation on Thursday. The series is one of the most acclaimed shows to be found on the streamer, though clearly that wasn’t enough to save it.
Debuting in January, As We See It follows three roommates, each falling somewhere on the Autism spectrum, “on their own unique journeys towards independence and acceptance” according to the show’s official description. The series was developed by Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights) and based on the Israeli show On the Spectrum. In a too-rare turn, the three actors playing the lead roles, like their characters, identify as being on the Autism spectrum.
In As We See It Rick Glassman stars as Jack whose father Lou (Joe Mantegna) has been diagnosed with cancer and is terrified his son won’t be able to support himself if the worst happens. Sue Ann Pien is Violet, who is desperate to find romantic companionship but whose unintended bluntness puts her in awkward situations. For example in one scene, while working Violet asks a customer out on a date and without waiting for an answer insists there will be no sex on the first two dates, “but on date 3 we can screw, okay?”
Of course, she says that last line just as her customer’s wife and child return to the line.
Albert Rutecki plays Harrison, whose condition comes with agoraphobia but in As We See It he does his best to get himself out, in part inspired by his young friend AJ (Adan James Carrillo).
At least one of the As We See It stars hasn’t had to wait long for a new regular gig. In August, Deadline announced that Rick Glassman had been added to the cast of the upcoming ABC Comedy pilot Not Dead Yet. Glassman was tapped for the series around the same time as Josh Banday (Upload), Jessica St. Clair (Bridesmaids), Mary Elizabeth Ellis (Masterminds), and Angela Gibbs (Hacks).
Not Dead Yet‘s lead is Gina Rodriguez (Annihilation), who plays Nell Stevens — a woman whose recent break up leaves her only able to live in Pasadena if she endures a roommate. That roommate is Edward, played by As We See It‘s Glassman, an environmental lawyer who won’t get off Nell’s back about her recycling habits, and who happens to also be Nell’s landlord.
There’s no word on whether or not there will be any attempt to bring As We See It to another platform, but it certainly seems like both critics and audiences would appreciate it. The first season earned an impressive 90% score from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and an even more impressive 98% rating from audiences.
As for the man who brought As We See It to Amazon, Jason Katmis will be moving forward with another series on another streamer. Earlier this year, Deadline and others reported Katmis was heading the series Dear Edward to Apple TV+.
