Spider-Verse Actress Slams Ezra Miller
Issa Rae slammed Ezra Miller and the movie industry for always protecting "repeat offenders."
Actress, Issa Rae has called out Hollywood for protecting problematic actors like Ezra Miller. She said the stuff that’s happening with The Flash star is a “microcosm” of the movie industry. In an interview with Elle, the 37-year-old said, “There’s this person who’s a repeat offender, who’s been behaving atrociously, and as opposed to shutting them down and shutting the production down, there’s an effort to save the movie and them.”
Issa Rae added that Warner Bros’ approach to Ezra Miller is a clear example of the lengths that Hollywood will go to save itself and protect offenders. The actress, who gained popularity with her YouTube series Awkward Black Girl, also spoke out against the post-#MeToo Hollywood. She told the publication it feels like things are regressing because there are just too many enablers for there to be real change.
“People have to be held accountable. There have to be legitimate consequences,” Issa Rae said, still referencing the lack of repercussions for Ezra Miller. The actress explained that if Hollywood stops protecting repeat offenders, women may be able to thrive in the environment. And they won’t have to live in fear of keeping silent because it’ll ruin their careers.
Of Hollywood in general Issa Rae maintained that it’s the worst industry when it comes to punishing people like Ezra Miller for misdeeds and actions. Because she claims that money will always reign supreme. Resigned to the depressing situation, the actress said she realized she can control her environment and the people she works with. “I don’t have to work for everybody. All money isn’t good money. All people aren’t good people,” she told the publication.
Issa Rae took one final shot at the Ezra Miller controversy, saying it’s just a constant pattern of abuse that will only persist if the industry continues to insist on “being this way.” The Flash star has been accused of multiple counts of abuse, disorderly conduct, and burglary since 2019. They were also arrested twice in Hawaii and once in Vermont in 2022. Last month, a friend of the actor told Vanity Fair that the DCEU alum “screams at and belittles” their female sexual partners.
But despite their legal troubles and shocking behavior as pointed out by Issa Rae, Ezra Miller’s upcoming DC movie appears is still on track for a June 23, 2023 release. In August, the actor who plays the titular superhero in the film, met with Warner Bros executives Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy to reaffirm their commitment to the project. They also apologized for bringing negative attention to the production and the company, The Hollywood Reporter said at the time.
Later, the Justice League alum said in a statement (via Deadline) that having recently gone through a time of intense crisis, they now understand they are suffering from complex mental health issues and have begun ongoing treatment. Issa Rae, far away from the Ezra Miller drama, is set to work on a superhero movie of her own. The actress will voice Jessica Drew / Spider-Woman in 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.
The Issa Rae-led feature, which will be released in the same month as Ezra Miller’s Flash movie, is directed by Joaquim Dos Santos, Kemp Powers, and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham. The story sees Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) go on another adventure across the multiverse with a new team of Spider-People.
