While we’ve seen Keanu Reeves as John Constantine before, it’s been nearly two decades since he last played the role. Now, with a new sequel on the way, fans can’t wait to see Reeves playing an older version of Constantine. While we may be a long way from getting an official look of Reeves as the character, Instagram user Spdrmnkyxxii has a covered with this awesome fan art that shows what this return might look like.
Fans of Keanu Reeves’ Constantine rejoiced when it was announced that Warner Bros was working on a sequel to the 2005 movie with Reeves and director Francis Lawrence both set to return. Since the release of the original, the film has become something of a cult favorite amongst DC fans, with many hoping that a sequel would one day come to fruition. Now the sequel is a reality, with many details already ironed out like Akiva Goldsman writing the script, JJ Abrams and Hannah Minghella producing, and Lorenzo DiBonaventura and Erwin Stoff executive producing.
While it’s been a long time since we’ve seen Keanu Reeves as Constantine, fans haven’t exactly been deprived of on-screen versions of the character. Matt Ryan’s portrayal as Constantine in the canceled Constantine show and his subsequent return on the canceled DC’s Legends of Tomorrow quickly became a fan-favorite depiction of the occult detective. Even more recently, Netflix’s The Sandman featured a gender-flipped take on the character played by Jenna Coleman.
While Constantine has never been a priority hero for DC Films, having Keanu Reeves return to the role and the potential success of the film could certainly change that. It would be interesting to see Constantine get integrated into the current canon of the DC film universe. Whether the Constantine sequel is connected to the DCEU films or doing its own thing ala Matt Reeves’ The Batman remains to be seen.
With Keanu Reeves and the original director returning, there is certainly hope that some other fan-favorite characters would return for the sequel. Potential actors that could return from the first movie include Rachel Weisz and Tilda Swinton’s Gabriel. Fans are definitely hoping Peter Stormare will return as Lucifer, as many feel that he gives one of the best portrayals of Satan ever put to screen.
Constantine followed Keanu Reeves John Constantine as he sought out to prove that a policewoman’s sister’s death wasn’t a suicide, but something more supernatural. The film managed to bring in $230.9 million at the worldwide box office, making it an overall success. This sequel has definitely been a long time coming, and many fans thought it might never happen.
There’s no official release window for Constantine yet, so we’ll have to wait a little while before we can see a non-fanart version of Keanu Reeves as Constantine. Until then, you can hear Reeves in another DC film as the voice of Batman in the animated DC League of Super Pets. Otherwise, you can check out the next big DC blockbuster in theaters when Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam is released on October 21.
