Jon Favreau is coming back to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to work on a Disney+ show. According to our trusted and proven sources, Jon Favreau is returning to Marvel Studios at the behest of MCU mastermind Kevin Feige, which means that this is likely a big project that needs a steady and reliable hand. Our best guess is that Jon Favreau is back in the Marvel side of Disney to run the upcoming, hotly anticipated Daredevil: Born Again series.
Jon Favreau is one of the big-name directors most associated with the Marvel brand, with maybe only the Russo Brothers and Joss Whedon being as impactful on the MCU as a whole. Although Jon Favreau has only directed two Marvel feature films, those two were the first Iron Man movie in 2008 and Iron Man 2 in 2010. Those two movies arguably set the tone for all the films that would follow and were the commercial hits that convinced Disney to go all-in on this Marvel thing.
However, in recent years, Jon Favreau has been more of an on-screen presence in the Marvel Cinematic Universe than a creative one. At this point, he has appeared as Harold “Happy” Hogan in as many Avengers and Spider-Man features as he has directed Marvel movies. As of late, Disney seems to have transferred him to the Lucasfilm wing of the company, where he created the mega-popular Mandalorian show for Disney+, along with The Book of Boba Fett and co-developed the upcoming Ahsoka along with Dave Filoni.
Thus, Jon Favreau coming back to Marvel for Disney+ would be a pretty big deal. Pulling him off the Star Wars side of things would likely only happen for the very biggest of upcoming Disney+ projects, and very little is as feverishly awaited as the announced Daredevil reboot starring a returning Charlie Cox (though maybe not anyone else). It is undoubtedly a project that Kevin Feige would need to have one of Disney’s most reliable directors to ensure success, and Jon Favreau would certainly fit the bill.
There is very little information available about Daredevil: Born Again as of yet, other than that it will star Charlie Cox, it is scheduled to arrive in the spring of 2024 (though Marvel has been mixing things up as of late), and it very well might be another origin story. There has no yet been an announced showrunner, which also lends some weight to the idea that Jon Favreau could be coming back to Marvel for the role.
Jon Favreau helming the new Marvel Cinematic Universe version of Daredevil would also be a nice little bit of fan service, as the director formerly portrayed Matt Murdock’s legal partner Foggy Nelson in the pre-MCU Daredevil film starring Ben Affleck in 2003. That particular movie was pretty unfortunate for everyone involved, but it, fortunately, did not seem to sour Jon Favreau on the idea of a Marvel collaboration.
We hope that Jon Favreau is coming back for Daredevil: Born Again and bringing his trademark combination of humor, action, and sentimentality with him. We shall just have to wait for the official announcement.
