The official trailer for the Netflix psychological drama starring Mila Kunis, Luckiest Girl Alive, is currently available on the subscription streaming platform’s YouTube account, and has amassed over 4.7 million views since its debut on YouTube last month. The film debuted on Netflix last weekend, based on the bestselling novel of the same name by Jessica Knoll. The streamer has been known recently for similar revenge fare, like this summer’s Do Revenge starring Camila Mendes and Maya Hawke, although Luckiest Girl Alive is much darker and showcases Kunis in a terrified state of mind throughout the course of the movie’s events.

According to FlixPatrol, a website dedicated to tracking content on streaming platforms like Netflix, Hulu, Disney+, and HBO Max, Mila Kunis’ Luckiest Girl Alive has debuted on Netflix at number one for the first weekend of its release. Detailing the story in a first-person narrative style, Kunis plays Tiffani “Ani” Fanelli, a young woman who reinvents herself throughout her 20s to establish a healthy career in journalism while getting engaged to a sophisticated and wealthy man named Luke (Finn Wittrock). It’s clear from the start that Ani is harboring a deep and dark secret, as she tries to escape the horrifying events of her teenage past and move on to her new life.

Unfortunately for Mila Kunis’ character in Luckiest Girl Alive, escaping high school is a little different for her compared to how it would be for most people. Ani’s past includes a deadly school shooting reminiscent of Columbine and Stoneman Douglas, for which she survived and many witnesses believe she took part in the planning of before the shooting began. The reason for this is because Ani was an outcast in school due in large part to rape allegations she made against a few fellow classmates, and later, a friendship she made with one of the shooters.

Dark and deeply disturbing on a variety of levels, Mila Kunis is strikingly convincing as Ani in Luckiest Girl Alive, despite the fact that the 28-year-old character is being played by the 39-year-old Kunis. Critics and audiences have so far flocked to watch the new Netflix film that costars DC Extended Universe actor Scoot McNairy, Chiara Aurelia, The Book of Boba Fett star Jennifer Beals, and Connie Britton, although critics don’t seem to be as impressed with the movie as its streaming audience. Rotten Tomatoes currently ranks Luckiest Girl Alive with a 40% on its Tomatometer based on 35 critics reviews, but the Audience Score is much better with a 75% based on over 250 ratings from users to the site.

Mila Kunis produced Luckiest Girl Alive as well as starred in the vehicle, so she appears to believe that the film has something going for it despite critical reception. As it quickly climbed the streaming charts to hit number one over the week, the film joins a long line of psychological dramas to debut on Netflix in recent weeks, including Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story starring Evan Peters. Kunis will follow-up this movie with an appearance on another Netflix show, That ’90s Show, a spin-off sequel to Kunis’ popular That ’70s Show which was canceled back in 2006.
