It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Mike Myers in an Austin Powers movie, but if his interview on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon is anything to go by, he’d love to bring the back eternally-randy spy just as much as we’d like to see him. In his interview, he says “I can neither confirm nor deny the existence or nonexistence of such a project,” before adding that he’d “love to do it.” So, while it seems like a fourth Austin Powers movie is certainly possible, there’s nothing official at this point.

It’s been two decades since we’ve last seen Mike Myers as Austin Powers in 2002’s Austin Powers in Goldmember. Goldmember managed to rake in over $300 million at the box office, so it’s certainly not a lack of success that would prevent the fourth movie from being made. Also, James Bond — the subject of parody for the Austin Powers films — is still as popular as ever, and Daniel Craig’s more nuanced take on the character could certainly be mined for jokes.

Of course, it’s not like Mike Myers hasn’t been busy since the most recent Austin Powers movie. Most recently, he played a supporting role in the David O. Russell film Amsterdam which is now in theaters. Amsterdam co-stars Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington as three friends who become suspects in a murder and get wrapped up in an outrageous plot.

If Mike Myers did return to the Austin Powers franchise, it could help reignite interest in Myers returning to some of his famous comedic roles. Powers isn’t the only character that fans have been waiting to see more of, as it’s also been a pretty long time since we heard Myers voice the swamp-dwelling ogre Shrek. A couple of years after Myers appeared in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, he voiced Shrek in the first Shrek movie, which became a massive hit.

While it’s been much longer since we’ve seen Mike Myers as Austin Powers, it’s still been over a decade since Myers last voiced Shrek in a feature-length film. Although a fifth installment of the Shrek franchise was announced years ago, news and production updates have been incredibly slow. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, writer Michael McCullers said that Shrek 5 was still in development and that the script was done.

That interview was way back in 2017 and then production of Shrek 5 was supposedly delayed by the pandemic, so who knows when exactly we’ll get to see Shrek and his pals return to the big screen. It would be great timing if they could bring Mike Myers back for both Shrek and a new Austin Powers in the future. While Mike Myers was once one of the most well-known comedic actors out there, that status has faded a bit over time.

Having Mike Myers star as some of his biggest characters could certainly bring the actor back into the spotlight once again. Whether or not that happens remains to be seen, but fans can certainly hope for it. Until we find out more on that front, you can head to theaters now and see Myers in Amsterdam.
