Henry Cavill is returning to the DC Extended Universe for a Superman sequel. The news was revealed by industry insider Devin Faraci on a recent episode of his Marvelvision podcast. He also explained that the reason the Man of Steel was returning is that Dwayne Johnson demanded the studio have him reprise the role for Black Adam.
“Like, he went hard, full-court press on Warner Bros. and made them go to Henry Cavill with a new deal saying they were gonna develop a new Superman movie,” Faraci told listeners. “And it was all because The Rock insisted.” The comments regarding Johnson’s involvement in The Witcher alum’s alleged comeback track with previous statements the Jungle Cruise actor made about the DCEU’s Last Son of Krypton.
During the Warner Bros panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Johnson was filled with praise for Henry Cavill, describing him as the Superman of our generation. He also referred to the Elona Holmes star as a buddy and a phenomenal Superman. “Every time I see him, we have some tequila and I say, ‘This guy is Superman,’” The Rock said via ComicBook. The last time fans got to see the British Native as the Man of Steel was in the theatrically released Justice League in 2017.
Despite his immense praise, Johnson did not confirm Henry Cavill’s involvement in Black Adam, which means his return as Superman should be taken with a grain of salt for now. However, this isn’t the first time his return has been mentioned. Earlier this year, self-proclaimed DCEU insider Syl Abdul, said that Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav plans to restore the Snyderverse with a Man of Steel sequel.
He made the claim on his YouTube channel, saying the project will be revealed next year with Zack Snyder attached to direct. If the rumors of Henry Cavill returning as Superman are true, a 2023 announcement would be somewhat poetic since next year marks a decade since the original hit theaters. The trailer for Shazam: Fury of the Gods also showed several scenes from Zack Snyder’s Justice League, hinting at the restoration of the Snyderverse.
Meanwhile, Henry Cavill has been flexing his acting skills away from Superman in The Witcher which has been a major franchise transition for the actor. Following its debut as Geralt of Rivia in 2019, the series became an instant hit, with a second season airing on Netflix in 2021. The third installment will be released in mid-2023.
While we wait for official confirmation about Henry Cavill’s return as Superman, fans can look forward to seeing the star in several new projects like Matthew Vaughn’s 2023 spy franchise Argylle. It is based on the yet-to-be-released novel by first-time author Elly Conway. He will also appear in the Highlander reboot and Steve Falk’s The Rosie Project which is based on Graeme Simsion’s book of the same name.
In November, the DCEU alum will reprise his role as Sherlock Holmes opposite Millie Bobby Brown in Netflix’s Enola Holmes sequel. Hopefully, Henry Cavill has Superman on his job card after that.
