Supernatural fans are no doubt looking forward to the premiere of the prequel series The Winchesters, especially after Jensen Ackles and Danneel Ackles confirmed we might be seeing some familiar actors reprise their Supernatural roles in the future. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Danneel said that she wouldn’t be reprising her role, but that some immortal characters like Ruth Connell’s Rowena. Jensen added that Rob Benedict’s Chuck would be another good candidate to come back.
Jensen Ackles and Danneel continued about their desire to bring on more Supernatural cast members in their prequel series, saying “Robbie and us have talked and if there is any opportunity to bring anybody back from the mothership, we will absolutely do so.” Robbie Thompson serves as the showrunner of The Winchesters. It sounds like Supernatural fans have a lot to look forward to, including fan service, with this new series.
Although we likely won’t see him on-screen much, Jensen Ackles will also be reprising his role as Dean Winchester, albeit in a narrator role. The Winchesters focuses on the parents of Sam and Dean Winchester, telling the story of how they met and how they saved the world. The entire story is told from Dean’s perspective, making Ackles a vital part of the new series.
While Jensen Ackles will be along for the ride, his Supernatural co-star Jared Padalecki won’t be involved. In fact, Padalecki wasn’t even aware the series was happening until it became official, which caused the actor to express his disappointment on Twitter about being kept out of the loop. Fortunately, Ackles explained the situation and Padalecki fully supports the prequel series.
Along with Jensen Ackles, the new series will star Meg Donnelly and Drake Rodger as Mary Campbell and John Winchester. The series will also star Jojo Fleites, Nida Khurshid, Demetria McKinney, Bianca Kajilich, Bridget Regan, and Michael Tacconi. Daneel Ackles will also be playing a role in the new series, though her character is being kept under wraps at this time.
Seeing Jensen Ackles return to the world of Supernatural is always going to be an exciting prospect, but the star has kept busy with some other big roles in the interim. Notably, he recently had a major role in the third season of The Boys as Soldier Boy. Ackles played a decidedly less noble character than he plays in Supernatural, so it was certainly an interesting change of pace for the actor, and he was often one of the best parts of the season.
In January, Jensen Ackles will also be able to resume production on the film Rust, which shut down production after the tragic on-set death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. The Hutchins estate reached a settlement with Alec Baldwin and the Rust production company, so the cast and crew will all be able to get back to work soon. Since production was significantly delayed, it remains to be seen when there will be a release date for Rust, but we’ll keep you updated on the latest.
In the meantime, we can look forward to hearing Jensen Ackles narrate the Supernatural prequel series The Winchesters. The release is just around the corner and just in time for the spooky season. Make sure to tune in when it hits the CW on Tuesday, October 11.
