Rust, the movie where cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died due to a discharged prop gun, is going to be resuming production in January 2023. Rust Movie Productions, LLC and star and producer of Rust Alec Baldwin have reached a settlement with the estate of Hutchins. Matthew Hutchins, husband of Halyna, will be on as executive producer as part of the settlement deal.
The settlement is still subject to court approval but this will likely mark the end of the wrongful death lawsuit that the Hutchins family filed back in February. On the set of Rust, Alec Baldwin was holding a prop firearm, which discharged and injured director Joel Souza and killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. According to the statements about the settlement from the involved parties, reported by Deadline, it now seems like everyone agrees that Haylna’s death was a tragic accident and that completing the movie in her honor is the best way forward.
Alec Baldwin also reiterated that the settlement considerations were done with the best interests of Hutchins’ son in mind. At this time, no charges have been brought forth against any of the involved parties by the Santa Fe Sheriff’s Office, which investigated the incident. According to the Deadline report, director Joel Souza and all of the original cast will also be returning when production is resumed.
Filming for Rust has been on hold since Halyna’s death. The film stopped production on October 21 and has been on hold due to the investigations and lawsuits surrounding the film. Filming started for the project on October 6.
While the death of Halyna Hutchins is tragic and unnecessary, hopefully, some good will come out of the incident. Namely, that there will be some changes to the safety and the usage of guns on set. Many are petitioning that legislation should be passed to ban live ammunition and firearms capable of firing live ammunition.
The Alec Baldwin incident is the most recent example, but it’s not the first time that someone has died or been injured by a prop gun on a film set. Another notable example was when Brandon Lee died on the set of The Crow from a prop gun fired a bullet instead of the blank it was supposed to have in the chamber.
Although prop gun deaths are rare, it doesn’t mean that there shouldn’t be legislation in place to prevent it from happening again. The Alec Baldwin and Halyna Hutchins incident could have possibly been avoided if this was the case. It remains to be seen whether new gun safety measures are implemented by Hollywood after this incident, but it seems likely that something would be done.
While Rust doesn’t have a release date yet, we should be hearing more about the movie now that it’s back in production. The film tells the story of a 13-year-old boy who has to go on the run with his younger brother and estranged grandfather in 1880s Kansas. Along with Alec Baldwin, the film will star Jensen Ackles, Travis Fimmel, Frances Fisher, Brady Noon, Swen Temmel, Travis Hammer, and more.
