Keanu Reeves is one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood, with a reputation for being one of the most excellent guys in the industry. With his turn as Neo in The Matrix to close out the 20th century, he changed the landscape of the science-fiction genre and did so again as the world-class assassin John Wick with his revolutionary action sequences using a wide lens. Now he looks to do so once more by stepping behind the camera; according to Comic Book, the actor revealed that he is in the running to direct his comic book creation BRZRKR.
BRZRKR is a comic book series created and written by Keanu Reeves and Matt Kindt (Suicide Squad and Wolverine and the X-Men) and drawn by Ron Garney (Justice League of America and The Amazing Spider-Man). The comic follows an immortal warrior known as Berzerker, known as B, as he fights his way through the ages in search of the truth behind his existence and how to end it once and for all. It raised more than $1.4 million in its funding campaign on Kickstarter, making the entire publication possible and bringing Reeves’ passion project to the shelves for the fans to fawn over.
Keanu Reeves created the story and character for publication with an independent publisher, Boom!, who brought the first 12-issue comic to the stands in March of 2021. Boom! is known for taking on a whole slew of projects and properties known for gracing the big screens over the years, including Planet of the Apes, Star Trek, Big Trouble in Little China, Escape from New York, Robocop, and Die Hard. With tie-ins, sequels, and prequels to all of these properties and more, the brand has proven to create buzz for older projects that can inspire new screen versions. With BRZRKR, they have found a property that will go from page to screen instead of the other way around.
Multiple screen projects are in the works for BRZRKR to make the jump to the screen, one is an anime spin-off series rumored to go for two seasons on Netflix, and the other is a live-action film adaptation starring none other than the creator and physical inspiration for B, Keanu Reeves. The film will be written by Mattson Tomlin (Project Power and The Batman), who recently took to social media to announce that he finished with the script and prompted Reeves to talk about the film’s status. He said that he had not yet read the script, but there was a 33% chance that he would also direct the movie.
Reeves went on to say that his directorial debut, The Man of Tai Chi, happened because he spent so much time developing the project that when it came time to find a director, he wasn’t able to hand it off. In the case of BRZRKR, he most definitely could feel the same way since this project is of his own creation and likeness, but he is remaining open to the possibility of a collaborator. With the actor’s ability to completely restructure the industry around his projects, BRZRKR could completely reimagine the comic book film genre for the future.
