Ant-Man has been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (and an Avenger since his appearance in Captain America: Civil War) since he appeared to end out Phase 2 of The Infinity Saga and served as a bridge between Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. Ant-man 3 was announced with Paul Rudd returning at San Diego Comic-Con this year as the beginning of Phase 5 of the MCU, or kicking off Phase 2 of The Multiverse Saga. But in a new leaked trailer, some fans are fearing for Rudd’s well-being, thinking that Ant-Man 3 could be the end of Scott Lang.

The trailer sees Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), Wasp (Evangeline Lilly), and Cassie (Katherine Newton) getting sucked into what only could be assumed as the quantum realm, along with Janet Van Dyne (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Hank Pym (Michael Douglas). The group comes into contact with Kang (Jonathan Majors), and there is a tense confrontation between Ant-Man and the newest big bad of the MCU that ends in the Avenger being manhandled against a wall. The feeling of the moment shows how increasingly outmatched Scott Lang becomes throughout the film and just how dangerous Kang is to the multiverse.

Ant-Man 3 seems to have a darker and more intense feel than Paul Rudd’s first two films in the series, whereas the first two felt more like comedic relief among the higher stakes of the surrounding films. With the increasing intensity, fans responding on Twitter are fearing for the safety of their beloved Scott Lang. Many comments seem to feel that there is no chance Lang comes out on top alone against the villain meant to be a new big bad, the general consensus being that it would be like Clint Barton/Hawkeye taking out Thanos in a standalone film.

The MCU isn’t above killing Avengers, with Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) sacrificing herself in Avengers: Infinity War and Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) doing the same in Avengers: Endgame. With the newest iteration of the Avengers team on the horizon, including new versions of the original characters like Sam Wilson as Captain America, Riri Williams as Ironheart, and Kate Bishop as Hawkeye, it isn’t farfetched to think the production is setting up a path for Cassie Lang to take over. Those two points combined and a darker tone from the trailer are making fans online start to feel like Ant-Man 3 may be the end of our beloved Paul Rudd.

Phase 4 of the MCU seemed to be a directionless mess of films determined to do a lot of building, with nothing on the horizon other than promises of more things coming. However, the appearance of Kang in Loki gave fans a glimmer of hope that a Thanos-level villain was stepping into the role of providing the Avengers with someone worthy of their power to fight. As much as fans love Scott Lang, the best thing for the Marvel Cinematic Universe may be to allow Ant-Man 3 to kill off Paul Rudd’s beloved character.
