A brand new American Pie movie is in the works from writer and actress Sujata Day. The multi-talented 38-year-old is set to develop and write a new installment of the raunchy coming-of-age comedy franchise for Universal 1440 Entertainment, a production arm of Universal Filmed Entertainment Group, according to The Hollywood Reporter. While plot details are still unknown, the story will be based on her original pitch and is described as a fresh take on the original.

The American Pie franchise began with its first film in 1999. The story followed a group of high school boys who make a pact to lose their virginity by prom night. Directed by Paul Weitz from a script by Adam Herz, the movie was a hit due to its irreverent and raucous depiction of high school life. It starred Jason Biggs, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Chris Klein, and Eddie Kay Thomas alongside Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan, and Eugene Levy as some of the most memorable characters in pop culture.

Following the film’s success, three direct sequels were released which included 2001’s American Pie 2, American Wedding in 2003, and American Reunion almost a decade later in 2012. The franchise also spawned five straight-to-video spinoffs bearing the same title. However, American Pie Presents: Band Camp, The Naked Mile, Beta House, The Book of Love, and Girls’ Rules, were not well-received. Hopefully, Sujata Day can breathe new life into the franchise.

Before pitching an American Pie reboot, Sujata Day made her directorial debut with Definition Please in 2020. The comedy-drama, which she also wrote and starred in, won several accolades. This included the trophy for narrative feature film at Next Generation Indie Film Awards. The 38-year-old is also known for her role as CeCe in Issa Rae’s The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl and had a recurring role in HBO’Insecure which ran for five seasons, Variety reports.

Sujata Day previously worked as a director on the LeVar Burton-narrated YouTube series This Is My Story. She has since served as a Sundance Lab fellow, Sundance Film Festival influencer, and HBO Visionaries ambassador. Additionally, the 38-year-old was honored with Women Making Waves Award at the inaugural Women’s Voices Now event. She was later profiled on NBCUniversal News Group’s Inspiring America series for the exploration of race and mental illness in Definition Please. With so many accolades, the American Pie franchise is definitely in good hands.

Although the new movie is still in the early development stages, it’s exciting that Universal has officially confirmed a return to the franchise with a fresh story. For now, it’s not clear if Day’s reboot will focus on teenagers or adults – as seen in American Wedding and American Reunion. But its trademark irreverence and crude humor will probably still have a place in the story. And with her impressive list of credits, the new American Pie is likely to showcase some intersectionality. However she spins it, the film will be welcomed by fans that have supported the franchise for so many years.
