As far as melodramas on cable networks and streaming services go, Yellowstone might be one of the best on television. Showrunner Taylor Sheridan seems to understand how to build a television show franchise that brings depth to characters like John Dutton, played by Kevin Costner, and his take on a wealthy ranch owner in Montana. The prequel series to Yellowstone is coming soon to the Paramount+ platform, aptly entitled 1923, and the series has recently added actor Jerome Flynn of Game of Thrones fame to the growing ensemble cast.
As confirmed by a report from Deadline, English actor Jerome Flynn has been cast as a character named Banner Creighton in the Yellowstone prequel show coming soon, 1923. The character that Flynn will play is going to be a stern and stubborn Scottish man who is the leader of the sheepmen in the area. 1923 joins the Tim McGraw and Faith Hill-led prequel 1883 as a spin-off of the popular Yellowstone series, as well as a proposed 6666 that will highlight the goings on around a Texas ranch that was introduced on Yellowstone in previous seasons.
Another spin-off and prequel to Yellowstone, which premieres its fifth season on November 13, 1923 has a star-studded cast of A-list stars and will most likely debut to audiences on the subscription streaming service this December. So far, filming has gone underway in Montana on the new show, with Star Wars icon Harrison Ford and Academy Award-winning performer Helen Mirren leading the cast. The show will also feature performances from some familiar faces like The Departed actor James Badge Dale, The Vampire Diaries alum Sebastian Roché, Darren Mann, Scream’s Marley Shelton, Big Sky actor Brian Geraghty, and Terminator 2: Judgment Day antagonist Robert Patrick.
Yellowstone’s newest installment of 1923 is supposed to be an origin story that fits well within the confines of the Dutton family, as well as the legacy that Costner’s character tends to recite within most episodes of the flagship series. 1923 will dive deep into a generation of the Dutton family that starts in the early 20th century with the introduction of a worldwide pandemic, Prohibition’s ending, the Great Depression, and historically accurate droughts during this time period in Montana. Ever so strong-willed and challenging at times, the Dutton family is known for their decisions to stay on their land no matter what elements they are faced with, so watching incredible performers like Ford and Mirren enter the Western space will most likely take audiences into new territory for the franchise.
As Jerome Flynn gets added to the cast of Yellowstone’s prequel 1923, the 59-year-old actor comes with a lengthy resume to justify his place on the series. After starring in several British shows and television movies, he made the leap to playing Bronn in Game of Thrones starting in 2011. An accomplished singer in his own right, Flynn released an adapted version of the hit song “Unchained Melody” in 1995 that took the top spot that year as the best-selling single on the UK Singles Chart.
