Benedict Wong is open to the possibility of a Marvel solo show for his fan-favorite character, the Sorcerer Supreme/former librarian of Kamar-Taj Wong (no relation). According to a recent interview in The Hollywood Reporter, Benedict Wong stated that he is aware of a burgeoning fan movement to get him his own starring vehicle (most likely as a show on the Disney+ streaming platform), and while he does not feel it is for him to push it along, he is warm to the idea. At this point in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we have gotten some projects that once would have seemed outlandish, like The Guardians of the Galaxy and Eternals, so it certainly seems like a Benedict Wong show could happen.

It is certainly interesting that Benedict Wong has become a mainstay in the MCU, considering he almost got cut as a character before he even appeared. Although Wong has appeared as Doctor Strange’s sidekick and valet since his first appearance in a 1963 issue of Strange Tales, director Scott Derrickson initially did not want to include him as a character in the MCU due to the potential risk of portraying offensive Asian stereotypes. Thankfully, the character was eventually included in the first Doctor Strange, with Benedict Wong bringing a fun and heroic energy to the character.

Since his first appearance in 2016, Benedict Wong has played Wong in an ever-increasing number of MCU projects, to increasing fan delight. After appearing in both Avengers: Endgame and Infinity War, he reprised Wong in a surprise cameo putting the beat down on Tim Roth’s Abomination in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Benedict Wong would follow that up with an appearance in Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which it was revealed he had retained the title of Sorcerer Supreme despite the return of Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to existence.

Benedict Wong and Patty Guggenheim in She-Hulk: Attorney at Law

More recently, Benedict Wong has been back in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness to combat the Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) and in the animated Disney+ series What If…?. He has appeared a surprising number of times in the Disney+ series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law so far, quickly forming a bond with an extraordinarily unflappable peak television fan named Madisynn King (Patty Guggenheim), which is a pairing for the ages if a Wong solo series does actually happen. Given that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has already joked about the MCU becoming the Wong show, let’s just pray.

In addition to his prominent Marvel role, Benedict Wong is set to star in the upcoming Netflix adaptation of The Three-Body Problem, which was developed by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. The series is based on the Hugo Award-winning science fiction novel by Chinese author Liu Cixin; in addition to the Netflix series, a Chinese-language adaptation is reported to be released in 2022. Benedict Wong will star in the Netflix version with Eiza González, Jonathan Pryce, and John Bradley.
