Liam Neeson starred in Clash of the Titans, which had a ridiculously huge cast, for as silly as the movie is. This ridiculous fantasy movie left many scratching their heads, especially considering it was meant to be a better reboot of the classic 1981 film. The movie is now streaming on Netflix, for those who are interested in seeing this modern take on a classic tale.

Clash of the Titans holds a poor 27% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with an almost equally terrible 40% audience approval rating. The movie would go on to make a surprising amount of money at the box office, pulling in $493 million in worldwide box office numbers, leading to a sequel called Wrath of the Titans. Liam Neeson would reprise his role as Zeus for the sequel as well.

Clash of the Titans follows Perseus, a demigod born from Zeus (Liam Neeson) and Danae. Perseus is lost at sea after Danae’s husband (King Acrisius) finds out that she was impregnated by Zeus and tosses the newborn in a chest. Perseus is raised by a fisherman and his wife before Zeus destroys their vessel leaving everyone dead by Perseus.

Perseus is then taken before King Cepheus and Queen Cassiopeia, who have waged war against the Gods. They are celebrating their rebellion when Hades appears and reveals the true lineage of Perseus. Hades then threatens to release the Kraken unless the daughter of Cepheus and Cassiopeia is sacrificed to appease the Gods.

Without getting too far into the plot of the movie, it is now streaming on Netflix. As previously mentioned, the movie had a ridiculously good cast, though it was mostly critically panned. Joining Liam Neeson as Zeus is Sam Worthington, Mads Mikkelsen, Ralph Fiennes, Gemma Arterton, and Alexa Davalos. This huge cast likely led to the high box office draw, as the film was not well reviewed by critics or audiences.

One of the biggest issues for most people is that Ralph Fiennes seemed to be mimicking his voice for Voldemort as Zeus. To be fair, he was completely thrust into the role of Voldemort during the time, as he had been in two Harry Potter films before Clash of the Titans had come out. That’s not an excuse, as Fiennes should have been able to differentiate between the two roles.

Clash of the Titans was just an odd film that was action-packed but contained some odd moments. Sam Worthington as Perseus was fine, but he was untrained and cowardly throughout most of the film until he defeated Medusa, and then learned how to fight immediately after. We know that Zeus (Liam Neeson) is his father, but that was just an odd transition.

Even though the original Clash of the Titans is outdated, we got a much better sense of the heroic journey that Perseus goes on. The 2010 remake was just trying to put an expensive wrapper on a movie that just wasn’t all that great, despite having a massive cast that included Mads Mikkelsen, Ralph Fiennes, and Liam Neeson. The 2010 version of Clash of the Titans was just one of the many reboots that Hollywood became transfixed with.

Although Clash of the Titans was a critical failure, it did make a ton of money at the box office, as previously mentioned. This led to the Wrath of the Titans sequel film, which brought back Sam Worthington, Ralph Fiennes, and Liam Neeson. Again, the sequel would go on to do well at the box office, pulling in $302 in worldwide ticket sales.

Though Wrath of the Titans was also deemed a success, the third film in the trilogy would not happen. It was meant to be called Revenge of the Titans, but because of how badly the first two films did critically, it was eventually scrapped. We might have seen Sam Worthington, Liam Neeson, and Ralph Fiennes return one final time, but now we will never know.

Clash of the Titans is streaming on Netflix right now, and we always say it’s better to watch a movie and decide for yourself if it’s as terrible as critics and people say. In its defense, Liam Neeson and Ralph Fiennes are quite a combination that should at least be experienced once. Check out the movie right now and see if it’s a faithful reboot.
