Today is Star Trek Day–the anniversary of the series premiere of Star Trek: The Original Series. To mark the occasion, Paramount premiered a new teaser for the third and final season of Star Trek: Picard featuring Patrick Stewart and most of the former The Next Generation cast that will be joining him for the end of the series. The teaser gives us shots of Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, Jeri Ryan, Michelle Hurd, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, and Gates McFadden; everyone except Brent Spiner, whose role is still something of a mystery. It also reveals the premiere date of February 16, 2023 on Paramount+.
The teaser still leaves us with plenty of secrets to unravel, but we know more than we knew before the trailer dropped. Judging by the message we hear transmitted early in the teaser, it will be Beverly Crusher (McFadden) who sparks the reunion between the old TNG crew. We also now know that, no doubt due to the events of Season 2, Seven of Nine (Ryan) is no longer persona non grata in Starfleet. She’s the new captain of the USS Titan, which we last saw under the command of Riker (Frakes) in Picard‘s first season; an animated version of the hero commanded the ship in Lower Decks, but chronologically, Picard takes place later. The Titan will be the ship that starts Picard and Riker on their journey apparently, though it isn’t clear from the teaser how many of the other heroes–if any of them–have joined them by that point.
One of the biggest questions about Star Trek: Picard Season 3–who will Brent Spiner play alongside Patrick Stewart–remains unanswered. Spiner has insisted he will not play Data again. He has since played both descendants and ancestors of Data’s creator Noonien Soong on Picard. Speaking to TrekMovie, showrunner Terry Matalas insisted it was best if fans found out as the story of the final season unfolds exactly who Spiner is playing. “If you see him now and got a name, there’s too many questions tied to ‘Okay, so who is that now?'” Cryptically, Matalas called the role “a new old character that you have seen and never seen before.” It’s only speculation, but one reasonable guess is he will be playing one of Noonien Soong’s other android creations–either Lore or B-4–perhaps with another consciousness inhabiting the body (accounting for Matalas’s mention of a “new old” character). But for now speculation is all we have.
One mystery that has been solved is whether or not TNG‘s fallen hero, Tasha Yar, will show up in the final season. At the end of August at the 56-Year Mission convention in Las Vegas, Denise Crosby confirmed her old TNG character is returning (in spite of dying twice). She refused to say how the character will return, however. It could be that Star Trek: Picard‘s final season will see Patrick Stewart reunited with Yar through time travel, a flashback, or maybe some kind of illusion.
