Karen Gillan may or may not be channeling one of her more forgotten projects and we are here for it. The Doctor Who alum posted a couple of grainy, but nevertheless sexy, shots this week on her Instagram with the star posing on and against a countertop in a short plaid skirt. You can see the images above, which may or may not be a nod to Gillan’s short-lived ABC sitcom Selfie. In particular, it’s tough to not be reminded of what survives as perhaps the most famous–and certainly the sexiest–scene in the series, when Gillan’s character dances to Wiz Khalifa’s “We Dem Boyz” at her desk.

As recently as last year Karen Gillan was insisting Selfie was a misunderstood gem that deserved a second chance. Gillan played Eliza Dooley, whose focus on gaining fame and fortune through social media rises to an unhealthy degree. To help refine her image and promote her brand, Dooley recruits her co-worker Henry (John Cho), a marketing expert. Debuting in 2014, Selfie was cancelled mid-season with only seven episodes having aired. The sitcom later found a home on Hulu (though it’s no longer there), where fans got the chance to stream the final six unaired episodes. Last July, Gillan told Refinery29 she liked the idea of a Selfie revival, though with the caveat that rather than an ongoing series, it be a “one off thing or like a shorter thing.”

She also told the site she never set out to be an action hero, but clearly she’s learned to adapt to new opportunities. While she might not be the most physically recognizable as the character, Karen Gillan has become best known as the blue-skinned cybernetic hero Nebula in the Guardians of the Galaxy films. Starting off as a villain in 2014’s Guardians of the Galaxy, her role expanded both for the 2017 follow-up and for appearances in other Marvel Cinematic Universe franchises. She appeared briefly, but quite memorably, along with the rest of the Guardians in this year’s Thor: Love and Thunder and–barring the kind of surprises the MCU is known for–we’ll next see her later this year in Disney+’s The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special. She’ll be reprising the role once more next year for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3–writer/director James Gunn’s final contribution to the film series.

Marvel is hardly the only place where Karen Gillan has gotten the chance to show off her action skills. In the revived Jumanji series she plays the scantily clad Ruby Roundhouse–the avatar of the younger Martha (Morgan Turner). We last saw Ruby and the rest of the heroes in 2019’s Jumanji: The Next Level. Last year Netflix gave Gillan the chance to star in a more brutal action vehicle alongside a mostly female cast in Gunpowder Milkshake.

Of course, action blockbusters aren’t all that’s in store for Karen Gillan. Next year she’ll play a woman afraid to face her mother’s deteriorating mental state in Late Bloomers. The drama is written by Anna Greenfield, and according to Deadline is based on her experiences. Late Bloomers will be the feature directorial debut of Lisa Steen, who worked alongside Greenfield on the 2019 rom-com Plus One.
