Tom Hanks is known for being in #1 movies, as most of his career has been comprised of blockbuster hit after hit. The same can be said for his current film, which is now in the #1 spot on streaming. That film is the biopic that covers the life of Elvis, which is aptly titled, Elvis. Hanks gets completely transformed in the film to look exactly like Elvis’s longtime manager, Colonel Tom Parker. The film is currently streaming on HBO Max, and fans can see Austin Butler and Tom Hanks give some amazing performances.
Elvis is just another biopic of famous musicians that have been popping up over the last five years. The film joins the likes of Bohemian Rhapsody, which followed Queen, Rocketman, which followed Elton John, and Straight Outta Compton, which followed rap supergroup N.W.A. Elvis holds a respectable 78% “certified fresh” critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though audiences have loved the film a lot more, given its 94% audience approval rating. The film is still in some theaters, and it has achieved making $281 million in worldwide box office numbers currently. Against a budget of $85 million, the film is quite a success right now.
Elvis follows Colonel Tom Parker (Tom Hanks) as he is on his deathbed after suffering a stroke. He then recounts the time when he first met the King of Rock and Roll. Elvis (Austin Butler) grew up in poverty in Mississippi before his family moved to Memphis, Tennessee. There, Elvis became obsessed with African American blues music on the famous Memphis Beale Street. He performs a song called, “That’s All Right,” when Colonel Tom Parker discovers him while he is working as a purveyor of a circus. He sees the superstar within Elvis and his apparent sex appeal. The film then shows the meteoric rise of the musician, including how Tom Parker takes control of the musician’s career. Elvis is meant to go on tour throughout the world but is stopped by Parker, who attempts to sue Elvis for a ridiculous amount of money. Although some of you may know the story of the King of Rock and Roll, others will want to see what happens in the film. We won’t ruin any more of the story, and everyone can go watch it on HBO Max right now.
Elvis stars Austin Butler in the titular role, with his performance being lauded by many people. Tom Hanks takes on the role of Colonel Tom Parker, Elvis’s long-time manager. Joining them in the film are Olivia DeJonge, Helen Thomson, Richard Roxburgh, Kelvin Harrison Jr., and many more. The film was directed by Baz Luhrmann. Luhrmann is famous for having directed Romeo + Juliet, Moulin Rouge!, Australia, and The Great Gatsby. From his resume alone, you can see how Luhrmann knows how to correctly bring music into many of his films. The film won Best Actor for Austin Butler at Hollywood Critics Association Midseason Film Awards. We are going to have to wait until 2023 to see if the film will be up for any Academy Awards. Many have stated that Butler could certainly be in the running for Best Actor.
Lisa Marie Presley, Elvis’s daughter, spoke about the film on her Instagram back in May. She revealed that the film was “nothing short of spectacular.” That is certainly some high praise coming from the daughter of the man that the biopic is about. Most of the Presley family, including Elvis’s ex-wife Priscilla, and his granddaughter Riley Keough have stated that the film does the Elvis name justice. Tom Hanks as Colonel Tom Parker is also mentioned as being fantastic. Considering that the film is #1 on streaming, we would have to agree that the performances are some of the best.
Elvis is currently streaming right now on HBO Max. There is a good reason why the film has jumped into the #1 spot on streaming, and that has everything to do with the torrid relationship between Elvis and Tom Parker. Tom Hanks and Austin Butler breathe life into these characters in a great way, and fans of Elvis’s music will love seeing how his life played out. Watch the film right now, and see why audiences have been raving about it since it was released.
