Harry Styles’ highly anticipated movie, Don’t Worry Darling premiered at the Venice Film Festival earlier this week. While the event was marred by a messy press conference, as the director refused to address several controversies surrounding the project, the former One Direction star talked about his approach to acting. Despite a successful start to his Hollywood career, the singer says he still thinks of himself as an amateur. “What I like about acting is I feel like I have no idea what I’m doing,” he told reporters ahead of the premiere.
He went on to explain his stance by adding that he considers music and acting to be complete opposites. “Making music is a personal thing,” he said via The Hollywood Reporter. “There are aspects of acting where you’re drawing from experiences a bit, but for the most part, you’re pretending to be someone else. That’s what I find the most interesting about it,” he continued. However, he does believe that the genres can aid each other since acting allows you to view the world through a different lens.
“It can help to create whichever way it goes. I find it really different,” Harry Styles said, adding that the fun part is you never know what you’re doing in either of them. The 28-year-old made his acting debut in Christopher Nolan’s 2017 war epic, Dunkirk. At the time Nolan told journalists that he cast the former boy band member because he had an old-fashioned face, the kind of face that makes you believe he could have been alive in that period. A few years later, he made a cameo appearance in the mid-credits scene of Marvel’s Eternals as Eros / Starfox.
At the press conference, Harry Styles spoke alongside co-stars Chris Pine, Gemma Chan, and Olivia Wilde, with whom he is rumored to be in a relationship. But he was left to field the many questions from the press. Despite his comments about acting, reports from the event were dominated by the rumored fallout between Wilde and lead star Florence Pugh – who only attended the red carpet photo call. There was also the blocking of a question relating to Shia LaBeouf who was ultimately replaced by Styles in the project.
Adding to the drama surrounding Don’t Worry Darling, Harry Styles was filmed refusing to stand next to his rumored girlfriend at Monday night’s Venice Film Festival premiere. In a clip shared by fans on Twitter, the “Watermelon Sugar” singer is seen politely declining a request from a member of Wilde’s team to switch positions on the red carpet. The pair supposedly fell for each other on the set last year. Since then, there have been conflicting reports as to the timeline of the actress’ split from her ex-husband Jason Sudeikis and when she started her new relationship.
Away from the drama, Don’t Worry Darling looks like a solid film. Billed as a psychological thriller, the story follows Alice (Florence Pugh) and Jack Chambers (Harry Styles) – a young, happy couple in the 1950s, living in the seemingly perfect company town of Victory, California which has been created and paid for by the mysterious company Jack is works for. But the cracks start to show when Alice becomes curious about the nature of her husband’s work on the secret Victory Project. As she investigates, tensions within the community are raised.
Directed by Olivia Wilde, from a screenplay by Katie Silberman, the Harry Styles-led feature is scheduled to hit theaters on September 23rd.
