Apple TV+ is starting to become a major player on the streaming front, having recently announced a slew of new original series including the highly anticipated Godzilla TV show that takes place in the same MonsterVerse as films like 2014’s Godzilla and its follow-ups Godzilla: King of the Monsters and Godzilla vs Kong. In June, the company announced the order of a new drama series called Sugar, with Collin Farrell attached to star. According to MovieWeb, the cast continues to come together with several more names announced for the upcoming show, one of them being former Breaking Bad star Anna Gunn.

Breaking Bad premiered on AMC on January 20th, 2008, and ran for five seasons. The drama was a huge hit for the network, taking home 16 primetime Emmy Awards. In fact, star Anna Gunn took home two Emmy Awards herself for her performance as Skyler White, the wife of Bryan Cranston’s Walter White on the series.

Anna Gunn’s role in the new Apple TV+ series Sugar has yet to be revealed, but Variety reports that four other cast members will join the actress including James Cromwell, Alex Hernandez, Lindsay Pulsipher, and Dennis Boutsikaris. It’s interesting to note that Boutsikaris also hails from the Breaking Bad universe. The actor played the character Rich Schweikart on AMC’s spin-off series Better Caul Saul.

Breaking Bad centered on chemistry teacher Walter White, who after being diagnosed with cancer, teams up with his former student, Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul), to cook methamphetamine to pay for his treatments. Anna Gunn played Walter’s wife Skyler, who over the show’s duration, learns of her husband’s illegal side hustle and becomes entangled in a web of lies, greed, and violence.

Since Breaking Bad ended, Anna Gunn has appeared in a string of movies including Land of Dreams, Being Frank, and Sully. She also starred alongside David Tennant in the crime series Gracepoint and had roles in other shows like Physical, Criminal Minds, and Shades of Blue. 2019 saw her reprise her role as Martha Bullock from HBO’s Deadwood for Deadwood: The Movie.

Sugar looks to have all the ingredients of another ground-breaking series for Anna Gunn to add to her resume. The new show comes from creator and executive producer Mark Protesevich, with Academy Award nominee Fernando Meirelles (City of God, Constant Gardner) attached to direct. Meirelles will also serve as executive producer along with Emmy Award nominee Simon Kinberg (The Martian, Deadpool), Audrey Chon (The Twilight Zone), and Scott Greenberg (The Guilty).

Plot details for Sugar are vague at this time, however, we do know it will be set in Los Angeles and will center on a private detective. The series marks the second collaboration between Simon Kinberg and Apple TV+, with the first being Invasion. Currently, in development, Sugar stars Collin Farrell, Anna Gunn, Alex Hernandez, Lindsay Pulsipher, and Dennis Boutsikaris. The streaming company has yet to confirm a release date, and it’s likely more talent will be announced as we wait to find out when the series will premiere.
