Christian Slater Is A Cannibalistic Ogre In New Fantasy Series
Well that's a new one.
This article is more than 2 years old
Considering he was one of the biggest heartthrobs of the ‘80s and ‘90s, it’s hard to imagine Christian Slater in a role not fit for a king. But, as Deadline first reported, the actor’s latest role will see him as a grotesque ogre. And this ogre isn’t of the sarcastic yet jolly Shrek variety. Instead, Slater’s character in Disney+’s upcoming take on The Spiderwick Chronicles will be a brutal and evil villain and one of the main players in the novel turned on-screen production.
Adapted from the books penned by Tony DiTerlizzi and Holly Black, The Spiderwick Chronicles will follow a family of four as they fall into a fantastical world full of monsters, fairies, and – of course – ogres. Consisting of twin brothers Jared and Simon, sister Mallory, and matriarch Helen, the family takes up residence in their great-great uncle’s home only to discover that there is a world beyond their own – one in which magic and mysticism exists. Christian Bale’s ogre is named Mulgarath and it sounds like he’ll be one of – if not the – main villain in the series. Like many ogres from fairytales, Mulgarath spends his day capturing and eating those who cross his path. But there’s more to this ogre’s desires than first meets the eye. He’s after Arthur Spiderwick’s Field Guide to the Natural World to get his grubby hands on the contents of the magical book. At this point, no other casting announcements have been made.
Rising to prominence in the mid 1980s, Christian Slater’s face could be seen dotting the walls of teenage girls everywhere after his major role in the cult favorite feature, Heathers. Landing several other prominent roles in film and television over the years, the actor would be cast in another huge, buzz worthy project when he appeared in Interview with the Vampire opposite Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. As of late, the actor has appeared in the USA Network series, Mr. Robot, for which he nabbed a Golden Globe Award back in 2016. He’s also recently been spotted in Netflix’s adult animated series, Inside Job, and Peacock’s crime drama Dr. Death.
Along with The Spiderwick Chronicles, which was announced back in November 2021 as part of the festivities on Disney+ Day, Christian Slater has a feature film in the works. The actor will appear in the Jerry Seinfeld helmed feature, Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story. The movie will center around the dramatic past of the household breakfast pastry – something we can’t believe has any scandal to it.
The star studded cast is set to include Melissa McCarthy, Jim Gaffigan, Amy Schumer, Hugh Grant, James Marsden, Jack McBrayer, Tom Lennon, Adrian Martinez, and – of course – Christian Slater. With a cast bursting at the seams with star power and headed by one of the biggest names in the comedy biz, we can’t wait to see how the production will play out. As of right now, no release date has been set for Unfrosted: The Pop-Tart Story or The Spiderwick Chronicles.
