Hocus Pocus is a Halloween classic, providing the perfect number of thrills and humor for a family-friendly ’90s Disney flick. That appreciation led to fans of the film being excited when Disney announced Hocus Pocus 2 in 2020. Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker are all set to return as the Sanderson Sisters, the witches who attempted to capture the kids in the original movie. While the three witches primarily served as antagonists in the first film, a trend that will likely continue in the second, we didn’t learn a ton about them. That looks to change in the sequel, as images have been released of the three Sanderson sisters as children. Check out the Instagram post below:
The image shows Mary, Winnie, and Sarah Sanderson as little witches played by Nina Kitchen, Taylor Henderson, and Juju Journey Brener. It’s unclear how many flashbacks we’ll see of the trio as kids, but it looks like Hocus Pocus 2 will certainly be filling in their backstory a little more. The new film is set 29 years after the events of the original and will feature new Salem high school characters named Becca (Whitney Peak), Cassie (Lilia Buckingham), and Izzy (Belissa Escobedo). The three accidentally light the Black Flame Candle, summoning the Sanderson sisters once again. Perhaps the flashbacks to their lives in 17th century Salem will show how the sisters became the evil coven they are today.
While the main trio of Bette Midler, Kathy Najimy, and Sarah Jessica Parker are returning to the cast list, there are some fresh faces behind the scenes. Anne Fletcher is taking over director duties for Hocus Pocus 2 with Jen D’Angelo writing the script. Fletcher is known for films like Step Up, The Proposal, and 27 Dresses and D’Angelo has worked on shows like Workaholics and Solar Opposites, so they definitely bring the comedy chops to the Hocus Pocus sequel. Along with Disney, the movie is produced by David Kirschner Productions. Kirschner came up with the story for the original movie with Mick Garris. Doug Jones will also be returning to the cast as Billy Butcherson, along with new cast members such as Hannah Waddingham, Tony Hale, Sam Richardson, Dan Finnerty, Froy Gutierrez, and more.
The plot and story details of Hocus Pocus 2 are being kept pretty close to the vest, but you can be sure the Sanderson sisters will be looking to wreak havoc in Salem again and capture children to maintain their youthful looks forever. Of course, it just wouldn’t be a Hocus Pocus movie without it being Halloween, so it seems likely that this will be the time of year that the new film will be taking place. In any case, those who prefer to tune in to Hocus Pocus to celebrate the year’s spookiest holiday are in luck. Hocus Pocus 2 is set to hit Disney+ on September 30. This means you’ll have a whole month to check it out before Halloween hits, or you can opt to save it for the holiday itself.
