The resurgence of Kevin Costner through his hit show Yellowstone seems to have rekindled his lifelong interest in Western cinema, which means that America is getting a new movie with Costner in a cowboy hat soon. The star/filmmaker’s new film has just cast the star of James Cameron’s historically colossal film Avatar, Sam Worthington, so it looks like Costner is looking to bring some big, yet achievable actors in. In addition, the new Kevin Costner film will also star American Sniper actress Sienna Miller and Stranger Things’ Jamie Campbell Bower.
According to Deadline, the new Kevin Costner film is titled Horizon and will star an ensemble cast. It is not immediately clear who Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, and Jamie Campbell Bower will be playing in the film; it actually seems unclear whether Costner himself will be acting in the movie. Kevin Costner is definitely directing and producing the film, which makes it his first return to the director’s chair in nearly twenty years. His last directorial effort was 2003’s easily forgotten Open Range, which coincided with an abrupt and long fall in the star’s career. However, it seems that Costner is finally in a position to make films again and hopefully can remind people why he won the Academy Award for Best Director for his debut film, Dances with Wolves.
Regardless of what specific roles Sam Worthington, Sienna Miller, and Jamie Campbell Bower are playing, it appears that Horizon is a passion project for the director. Horizon is described as taking place over a 15-year time period around the American Civil War when westward expansion massively boomed. The film will explore different facets of the complex period of America from different perspectives, including the Indigenous people that were displaced, the ruthlessness inherent in the Manifest Destiny ethos, and the sheer physical hardship of the peoples attempting to colonize the western half of the continent.
In addition to Horizon, Sam Worthington will soon be in theaters, reprising his role of Jake Sully in the Avatar sequels. The first James Cameron Avatar movie was released all the way back in 2009, swiftly becoming the highest-grossing movie of all time (a title it has been required to defend in the past) and a benchmark for cinematic visual effects. It has taken over a decade for James Cameron to bring back Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Sigourney Weaver, and all the rest. Interestingly, though Sigourney Weaver’s human character died in the first movie, she will be taking on a new role as an alien teenager in the upcoming Avatar: The Way of Water.
While Sam Worthington’s career did not explode as you might expect from the lead of the literally biggest movie ever, he has stayed busy in the years since the first Avatar. He starred as the legendary Greek hero Perseus in Clash of the Titans and its sequel Wrath of the Titans, giving him potentially another franchise to return to in the future. However, given the number of Avatar sequels James Cameron has lined up, he might stay pretty busy for a while.
