Ana de Armas has turned herself into one of the most sought-after actresses in the world. She has built her career up in a huge way in the past five years, by garnering massive roles that include working with some of the top talents in the acting game. She is set to portray Marilyn Monroe in the biopic about her life called, Blonde. That film is set to debut on Netflix on September 28th. However, that is not the only Netflix film that she is part of. One of her gritty 2019 ventures is currently dominating the streaming platform. That film is The Informer. Fans are loving the crime drama, as it currently holds a top 5 spot on Netflix.
The Informer is a British crime drama that was released in 2019 in the UK. It only received a very limited release in the United States, pulling in just under $3 million in box office numbers. In the film’s defense, it had been released in the U.S. in November of 2020, which was essentially the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. Few people were going to move theaters, let alone go out in public. The film holds a 63% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with a nearly similar 61% audience approval rating. Those are some decent numbers for a film that was dead in the theaters because of the pandemic. At least, people seemed to genuinely enjoy the film. With a cast that includes Ana de Armas, it would be hard not to enjoy the film to some degree.
The Informer follows Peter Koslow, who is released from prison early, in exchange for working as an informant for the FBI. He works his way up in a Polish gang and is meant to take down Ryszard “The General” Klimek, who runs the gang. Koslow sets up a drug deal, where he is to smuggle a ton of Fentanyl into the country. However, Koslow’s friend, Staszek, learns of a different buyer. They veer off from the original plan, leaving Koslow to deduce that the buyer is also an undercover cop. The deal goes badly, and Staszek shoots the undercover cop. Koslow’s handlers abandon him, and he is taken before The General to answer for the deal going badly. The General then tells Koslow that he must return to prison and run the drug game from inside. He refuses at first before the General threatens Koslow, his wife Sofia (Ana de Armas), and their daughter. Koslow agrees and is sent back to prison where he encounters another drug trade being controlled by another mob figure. Without ruining the rest of the film, everyone can go watch The Informer on Netflix right now to see the rest of the plot play out.
The Informer stars Joel Kinnaman, Rosamund Pike as Special Agent Erica Wilcox, Common as Edward Grens, Clive Owen as Keith Montgomery, Ana de Armas as Sofia Koslow, and Eugene Lipinski as Ryszard “The General” Klimek. Despite the film receiving a fantastic cast, it was unfortunately released at a time when the movie theaters were mostly not open. That could have certainly changed the score a bit, as only 57 critics reviewed the film via Rotten Tomatoes. That is not a lot in comparison to the over 1,000 usual critics for any given bigger film. Despite the low numbers, the film does hold some great performances. For anyone that loves crime dramas, especially those that deal with prisons, then this film is likely going to be one to check out.
Ana de Armas has many films ahead of her. The previously mentioned Blonde will debut on Netflix in September. She was also part of a huge cast for The Gray Man, which debuted on Netflix in July. The film stars Chris Evans and Ryan Gosling alongside Armas. Next, she reunites with Chris Evans for a romantic comedy called Ghosted. Ghosted currently does not have a release date.
Ana de Armas is spectacular in everything that she does. Despite The Informer receiving far less attention than intended, the film is still a thrill ride. The film is in the top 5 on Netflix for a reason. The fans have clearly spoken, and everyone should give this film a shot, as it is currently streaming on Netflix right now.
