When it was announced back in 2016 that Seth MacFarlane was making a live-action science fiction show called The Orville, people were a little confused. Then (and now) Seth MacFarlane is best known for shows and films like Family Guy and the one where Mark Wahlberg is teamed up with a talking teddy bear, so when it turned out that The Orville was as much of a straight-faced homage to Star Trek as it was a comedy, it was a bit surprising. However, the show has managed to build a fierce following with its combination of emotional storytelling and goofy space-gags. Currently, #RenewTheOrville is trending on Twitter after Seth MacFarlane revealed that by hook or by space crook, he will be making a fourth season of The Orville.
In an interview with TVLine, Seth MacFarlane revealed that there are some hurdles to making a fourth season of the acclaimed science fiction series. The recent third season of the show was apparently the final one on the primary cast’s contracts, which means that any continuation of the show will require the actors to sign back up. Of course, contracts are negotiated all the time, but it is definitely a step that will have to be taken. Seth MacFarlane also stated that any further seasons of The Orville will also have to fight for time with his many other projects (we get it, you’re successful), including an upcoming adaptation of his Ted franchise on the Peacock streaming platform.
There is also the question of what network might host a new season. Seth MacFarlane originally sold The Orville to the Fox Network, which aired the first two seasons of the show. The third season (officially titled The Orville: New Horizons) is airing directly on the Hulu streaming platform, which is an affiliate of the Walt Disney Company. On August 10, the Disney+ streaming service will begin hosting all three seasons of the show, which Seth MacFarlane said he hoped could expose The Orville to a whole new audience. When it aired on Fox, the show eventually became one of the most popular shows on the network. As such, it seems like fans are pretty invested in getting a new season of the show:
Seth MacFarlane stars in The Orville as Captain Ed Mercer, the commander of the titular ship. Adrianne Palicki co-stars as his first officer and ex-wife (space drama!). The two central characters are supported by a talented cast including Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, and Peter Macon. The show is a direct homage to Star Trek: The Next Generation, and in many ways, has more of the optimistic, utopian DNA of that franchise than many of the increasingly dystopian new shows.
It seems that if it is up to Seth MacFarlane, The Orville could be going on for quite a while longer. Given that you will soon be able to watch the show on multiple streaming platforms, there has never been a better time to try to get hooked on The Orville.
