There is a slew of Christmas movies that come out every year. From small made-for-tv films dripping in cheese for Hallmark and GAC to bigger budget theater runs, films are one of the ways we all get ourselves into the spirit. While most of these films stay under the radar and are forgotten the following year when the newest holiday cheer movies replace them, some endure season after season and become a tradition. Some of the best enduring films include National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation, Home Alone, and It’s a Wonderful Life. However, if you are a kid from the 90s, one of the films at the top of the list is The Santa Clause. After three films, Disney+ is bringing Tim Allen back for the red suit for a miniseries, and they just landed another 90s mainstay performer.
Deadline reports that the miniseries has landed Laura San Giacomo in a role alongside Tim Allen. While the film trilogy delves into a lot of Christmas and holiday lore, the miniseries seem to be diving into international lore. Giacomo has been cast as La Befana, an Italian Christmas witch who gave candy to the good children on January 6th, known as The Epiphany. She also delivered coal to the bad children. If that sounds familiar, it should. She has been flying around the skies long before ole Kris Kringle ever slapped a reign on Rudolph. While there isn’t a lot of information on the synopsis, it is possible that Giacomo could be playing a villain to Tim Allen’s Santa Claus.
People have been clamoring for Tim Allen to don the big red suit for a fourth installment ever since he faced off against Jack Frost in 2006’s The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause. After 14 years of waiting, Disney is giving him a chance. The synopsis so far says the series will deal with Scott Calvin approaching his 65th birthday and realizing that he can’t be Santa Claus forever. He will likely spend six episodes looking for a replacement for himself so he can take his wife and children south of the pole to live a normal life. Apparently, he longs for a life standing in line outside the Apple store and buying Christmas presents as opposed to having an army of elves getting them for him.
As for the rest of the cast that will join Tim Allen in returning to the Santa Clause franchise, David Krumholtz is set to return as head elf Bernard. Elizabeth Mitchell is set to return as the loving Mrs. Carol Clause. Kal Penn, Matilda Lawler, and Austin Kane are rounding out the cast. Showrunner Jack Burditt and producers Kevin Hench, Richard Baker, and Rick Messina will collaborate with Allen again. They previously worked together on Home Improvement and Last Man Standing. With all of the controversy surrounding Disney recasting Buzz Lightyear in Lightyear, the fact that the company is giving the actor another opportunity to return to one of his most iconic roles shows they are burying the hatchet. Is it too much to ask for Judge Reinhold to return with his sweaters?
