There seems to be something happening over at Warner Bros. Discovery in recent weeks, particularly when it has to do with HBO Max. The streaming subscription service removed six titles from its catalog of movies and television series practically overnight and in a quiet matter. Just this week, Batgirl was announced to be dead in the water as production of the film was halted, and the movie will apparently never see the light of day. The secretive nature of many of Warner Bros. Discovery’s plans may be sparking a debate on social media about whether some other projects are safe from cancellation, in particular Peacemaker Season 2. However, James Gunn has revealed some exciting news about the HBO Max series and the upcoming season.
According to a report by Variety, director James Gunn has confirmed that Peacemaker Season 2 is currently in production and seems to be safe from cancelation for the time being. Posting to social media, the Guardians of the Galaxy helmer apparently wants fans to know that not all of the projects under the DC Extended Universe umbrella are on the chopping block, particularly the second season of an HBO Max favorite. Responding to a user asking about the series, Gunn replied on Twitter that everyone should “calm down,” then posted a picture of actor Jennifer Holland behind-the-scenes filming the show’s second season. Holland plays Emilia Harcourt, a character she originated in Suicide Squad.
Yes, guys, calm down.

With the news that Peacemaker Season 2 is safe for now, audiences may focus on what exactly isn’t safe anymore at HBO Max. Batgirl was supposed to wrap up filming any day, but Warner Bros. Discovery recently chose to cancel production and now release the film on HBO Max or in theaters, according to IGN. The movie was going to be a big breakout for star Leslie Grace, who would have taken on the titular role. Grace is well-known for her singing career and is among the many cast members of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s film adaptation of In the Heights. Coincidentally, In the Heights is currently available on HBO Max. Another tragedy in the world of HBO Max is the upcoming Scooby-Doo sequel, Scoob!: Holiday Haunt, which was canceled the same day as Batgirl. Seems things with the WarnerBros. Discovery merger is not going that smoothly.
Conversely, Peacemaker Season 2 was renewed in February 2022 and seems to currently be in production. John Cena leads the series as Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker, a character he originated in James Gunn’s first DC Extended Universe entry, Suicide Squad. The first season of Peacemaker was a bonafide hit for HBO Max after its debut in January of this year, so it was quickly renewed for a second season and stands as one of the Max Originals to avoid cancellation. So far in recent weeks, HBO Max removed several original movies from its platform, including The Witches, Moonshot, Superintelligence, An American Pickle, and Locked Down. Gunn will next be releasing The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special to Disney+ in December 2022.
