Setting up the future is what the Marvel Cinematic Universe does. Since 2008, the MCU trained audiences not to leave their seat in the theater until the lights come on and the staff kicks them out so they can clean for the next showing. Deep into Phase 4 of the franchise, audiences still look forward to the future every time the credits begin to roll. In the 2021 feature Eternals, fans were treated to the reveal of Dane Whitman (Kit Harington) as Black Knight and Harry Styles as Starfox, better known as Thanos’ brother. With those two revelations leaving fans asking what is next, a sequel was only a matter of time. In a recent interview, Patton Oswalt may have given an update on when we can expect Eternals 2.
In the after-credit scene involving Harry Styles, he appeared with his trusty friend, Pip the Troll. Patton Oswalt, a stand-up comedian, known for his relatable nerdiness, appeared as the character. In an interview on The TODAY Show, Oswalt gave fans an update on Eternals 2 and who could be attached to direct. In a humorous bit, he pretended to flex his comic book knowledge by diving into the history of the characters. Once brought back to focus, he announced that a sequel had been confirmed, and director Chloe Zhao would return to the helm.
It wasn’t a given that Eternals would get another outing. The film is one of the lowest-rated entries into the MCU and was plagued with harsh critiques from the moment it was released. It is hard to believe that a film with a run time of two hours and thirty-seven minutes could feel rushed, but that was the reality of the overstuffed spectacle. While the original Avengers featured a team-up of six heroes, a government organization, and a cosmic villain, it was built on the backs of five lead-in films. It handled the enormity of the project well. Eternals introduced 10 new heroes, a new villain, and many new concepts. Despite the criticisms, there is hope that Eternals 2 will lean on Patton Oswalt and Harry Styles for success.
Patton Oswalt is no stranger to comic book features or even the MCU. While he has appeared in animated works such as Static Shock and Hulu’s M.O.D.O.K, he has also been in live-action comic book projects like Blade Trinity. He has even appeared in the MCU as he played multiple characters in the television off-shoot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. He is also not exclusive to Marvel. He will appear in Netflix’s adaptation of the DC property, The Sandman. With those kinds of credits and the star power of Harry Styles by his side, Eternals 2 has some solid footing to turn the franchise around.
While the original film has its faults, it mostly suffered from having to build an entire franchise worth of lore and characters in a relatively short amount of time. Patton Oswalt seemed legitimately excited about the possibility of not just Eternals 2 but more Starfox and Pip the Troll adventures on the horizon. In the expanse of Phases 5 & 6 introducing new characters to carry the MCU into the future, it will be interesting to see how the duo fits into the plan.
