The world was shocked yesterday when the newest DC film, Batgirl, was canceled by Warner Bros. Discovery. The film was reportedly finished, but the new merger has caused all kinds of trouble for upcoming projects. This could mean that all upcoming projects on HBO and HBO Max could be put on hold or canceled. That was the case for the new sequel to Scoob! The new animated Scooby-Doo film, titled Scoob!: Holiday Haunt is officially canceled.
There seems to be more going on behind the scenes than has been reported about the merger of Warner Bros and Discovery. Rumblings are the mega company might be aiming to clean house on planned projects and just start things over. This is just speculation, but it appears it could hold some truth as Batgirl and now the new Scooby-Doo film have both been canceled. More troubling is Batgirl being canceled so willingly, especially with other future DC projects currently being worked on. Black Canary and Blue Beetle could be next on the chopping block if things keep going along this trend of cancelations. Even odder is that Batgirl had a $90 million budget and Scoob!: Holiday Haunt was around $40 million. Now both have been canceled and the money wasted too.
Rumors began to swirl that WarnerBros. Discovery would be deciding about massive layoffs in the coming days, and the reports are that some 70% of developmental staff are going to be losing their jobs. This is only a rumor, but that could be why Batgirl and the new Scooby-Doo films have been canceled. If this rumor is shown to be true, we could be seeing a host of cancelations follow those two films. Should all the planned scripted shows, and other films be given the ax, it might not look good for the budding super company.
These cancelations could also be a result of issues that have carried over from the pandemic. The world has not fully removed itself from the dangers of COVID-19, and that could be still affecting the filmmaking and TV world. Companies have been trying to catch back up after delaying many of their money-making ventures for the past few years. It might be time to dump expensive exploits and try and start over. Batgirl and the new Scooby-Doo are just two of the unfortunate cancelations that have happened. More might be incoming. There is a ton of scripted content planned for the network, but with 70% of staff being rumored to be let go, they will have no choice but to cancel a ton of shows and films.
The new Scooby-Doo film and Batgirl are two big budget films that WarnerBros. Discovery can likely save some money right now, even though it might have been smarter to just release them. However, we don’t know what is happening behind the scenes. Hopefully, the rumors are not exactly true, and many people don’t have to lose their jobs. Still, it is a huge letdown that the world will not be able to see Batgirl and Scoob!: Holiday Haunt.
