These days, Gwyneth Paltrow is probably most familiar to many audiences around the world as Virginia “Pepper” Potts in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While she has not ever had a solo movie nor is officially an Avenger, Gwyneth Paltrow has been part of history’s biggest movie franchise since the very beginning, starting with 2008’s Iron Man. Aside from that, she has a long and distinguished acting career and an Academy Award for her performance in 1998’s Shakespeare in Love. Per an article in Vulture, it is also Gwyneth Paltrow’s belief that her own children get “access” to show business contacts that others do not, but that actually makes things harder for them.
Gwyneth Paltrow expressed these sentiments about her family’s wealth of show business credentials (and actual, monetary wealth) on Who’s in My Bathroom?, a YouTube series from Hailey Beiber. After making a smoothie together, Paltrow and Beiber mused on the topic of nepotism, which is to say, the practice of preferential treatment in professional contexts to family or friends. Gwyneth Paltrow took the time to say that she thinks the children of “somebody” (ie, somebody famous or powerful) often “get access that other people don’t have.” However, it is her belief that “once your foot is in the door, which you unfairly got in, then you have to work almost twice as hard and be twice as good,” and also that many people will “pull you down” or act as though the family connections one used to get into a preferential spot somehow mean you don’t rightfully belong there.
The conversation between Gwyneth Paltrow and Hailey Beiber drifted into the direction of nepotism for understandable reasons. Paltrow was formerly married to Coldplay singer Chris Martin (who she “consciously uncoupled” from in 2014, with whom she has two children. She is currently married to Brad Falchuk, television producer and co-creator of Glee, American Horror Story, and Pose, among many others. It is safe to assume that her children will probably have more “access” than others whose parents are not “somebody.” For her part, Gwyneth Paltrow is the daughter of Emmy and Tony-winning actress Blythe Danner and director Bruce Paltrow; incidentally, her first onscreen role was in a film directed by her father and her first theatrical role was at a well-regarded festival her mother regularly performed at. She attended Crossroads School with many other well-regarded alumni.
On the other side of the conversation from Gwyneth Paltrow, Hailey Beiber is married to mega-popular musician Justin Beiber and is the daughter of actor Stephen Baldwin; when she was 13, she appeared on an episode of Saturday Night Live being hosted by her uncle Alec Baldwin. Speaking of Saturday Night Live, Gwyneth Paltrow appeared in Iron Man alongside Robert Downey Jr, the nephew of legendary SNL writer Jim Downey and son of experimental filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. The villain of the film was portrayed by Jeff Bridges, the son of Hollywood Walk of Fame member Lloyd Bridges and brother of three-time Emmy, two-time Golden Globe, and Grammy Award winner Beau Bridges.
