According to James Gunn, Marvel fans who were hoping to see Harry Styles reprise his role as Eros aka Starfox from Eternals in the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy film will need to head back to the drawing board on their fan theories. The director recently sat down with ExtraTV and, in a clip that you can see below, struck down the belief that the brother of Thanos would be appearing in the highly anticipated Guardians-centered movie. When tossed the question, Gunn immediately responded “nope,” going as far as to say that the character won’t “pop up” in the next installment featuring everyone’s favorite cosmic travelers.

The rumor mill has been churning speculations out more than ever since Kevin Feige recently revealed that Harry Styles’ character will have some “exciting” things coming his way in the MCU. Because Starfox is the brother of world destroyer Thanos, and then in turn the uncle of Gamora and Nebula, there was a huge possibility that Styles would appear in the upcoming Guardians film. But, alas, the One Direction singer won’t be meeting the Guardians just yet. We do hope to see their paths cross because can you imagine how good the banter would be?

In Eternal’s short introduction to Starfox, he’s seen tagging along with Pip the Troll (Patton Oswalt) to aid Thena (Angelina Jolie), Druig (Barry Keoghan), and Makkari (Lauren Ridloff) in rescuing the other celestial beings, Sersi (Gemma Chan), Kingo (Kumail Nanjiani), and Phastos (Brian Tyree Henry) from Arishem (David Kaye). Although he’s different in heart, mind, and certainly looks from his now deceased brother Thanos, Starfox has also used his powers for evil. His ability allows him to manipulate and control the emotional state of others, something that he’s used in the past to draw in romantic partners. Obviously, this has previously led Eros into hot water including finding himself put on trial for sexual assault – but we’re thinking Marvel may leave that part out of Styles’ storyline.

With Gunn striking down the rumors of Starfox’s appearance in his final Guardians film, the question remains as to where he’ll show up. While Eternals 2 is certainly somewhere lingering in the horizon, it’s uncertain just how far off it will be. The film left us on a giant cliffhanger that likely won’t be resolved until the sequel, but Marvel loves to throw us for a loop, so it’s possible that Styles and the rest of his celestial pals will show up in another film with other heroes stepping in to lend them a hand. With so much being teased for rollout phases 4, 5, and 6, truly anything is possible.

Even without Harry Styles, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 is trucking right along. During that same chat with ExtraTV, Gunn revealed that he was having a blast working on editing the film. As we cruise through 2022, we’re keeping our eyes on the prize for the May 5, 2023 release of the bittersweet final installment of the Guardians’ solo adventures. And, possibly more so, we’re also keeping our eyes peeled and ears open for more news surrounding exactly when we can expect to see Starfox and the rest of the Eternals in future MCU productions.
