Long before What If…? showed us T’Challa leading the Guardians of the Galaxy and before we watched Doctor Strange possess the desiccated corpse of his own variant, 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse was teaching audiences everywhere the joys of alternate versions of popular superheroes. Now with the sequel Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse on the way, fans are wondering which Spidey variants will be adapted to the big screen this time around. And as it so often does, a piece of merchandise has wound up spoiling at least one of the variants. We now know that the animated sequel will include Hobie Brown, aka Spider-Man or, as he’s better known, Spider-Punk.

Pictures surfaced on social media of new Across the Spider-Verse toy merch, including a Spider-Punk mask and a playable toy guitar. The mask includes the signature spikes sticking out of Brown’s Spidey mask. You can see the images below.

What we don’t know yet is who will be voicing Spider-Punk. We know to expect much of the Into the Spider-Verse voice talent to return such as Shameik Moore as Miles Morales, Hailee Steinfeld as Gwen Stacy, Jake Johnson as Peter Parker, Oscar Isaac as Spider-Man 2099, and Brian Tyree Henry as Jefferson Davis. We also know Issa Rae will join the cast as Jessica Drew, Jason Schwartzmann will voice the bad guy The Spot, and Jorma Taccone will be the Vulture. But as far as new Spidey variants, there’s no word. We also don’t know if we can expect the variants we’ve already met to return, like Spider-Man Noir and Spider-Ham.

Hobie Brown made his first comic book appearance in 2014’s Amazing Spider-Man #10 as part of the 2014-15 “Spider-Verse” Marvel Comics event that inspired Into the Spider-Verse. The anarchy-themed hero actually does not like being called “Spider-Punk,” and prefers Spider-Man, but regardless Spider-Punk is the name that stuck. And come on. Look at him. He has freaking spikes coming out of his mask; he’s Spider-Punk.

Initially Spider-Punk was just one of the slightly more visible variants in the army of Spider-themed characters who united in “Spider-Verse” to battle the vampiric Inheritors who were hunting down and murdering Spider heroes all across the Multiverse. He re-appeared three years later in the sequel event “Spider-Geddon,” though it was rare he had his own time in the spotlight. Regardless his unique visual style and attitude made him a fan-favorite and in 2022 his own solo Spider-Punk comic book series debuted, written by Cody Ziglar with art by Justin Mason. On Earth -138, Spider-Punk isn’t the only punk-themed version of Earth-616’s heroes. That world’s Captain America carries a shield with an Anarchy symbol on the front, and the Earth-138 Bruce Banner changes into the Hulk by listening to a specific mixed tape.

Spider-Punk, Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, and a whole bunch of other Spider people will show up in theaters a little less than a year from now. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, Part One is scheduled to bow on June 2, 2023.
