Comic-Con is wrapping up today and while properties like Marvel and Star Trek had some major announcements, Star Wars kept things relatively quiet this year. There were some costume reveals for Andor, some new action figures for The Mandalorian, and a bunch of announcements from LucasFilm Publishing about upcoming comics and novels, but it wasn’t nearly as bombastic as you might expect from the beloved franchise. One cool Star Wars-related thing we did get from this year’s Comic-Con is this announcement of Amandla Stenberg as the lead for the upcoming The Acolyte series, posing next to everyone’s favorite astromech. Check out the post below:

Amandla Stenberg also got in on the fun, posting the news on her Instagram. Out of all the upcoming Star Wars projects, The Acolyte is one of the most intriguing. For one, the hasn’t been a lot of news and plot details about the project, giving it an air of mystery. We do know that it will be taking place during the High Republic Era, which hasn’t been explored on-screen yet. This era takes place two to three hundred years before the events of the original Star Wars trilogy, so there is plenty of fresh material to usher in an era fans haven’t seen much of. While the High Republic has been explored in novels and comics, it will be cool to finally see it realized in live action.

More details about the plot of The Acolyte reveal it will be taking place near the end of the High Republic Era. The High Republic Era was something of a golden age for the Jedi, but the end of the era saw the dark side begin to emerge. We also know that Leslye Headland will be creating, writing, and executive producing the series. Headland is best known for her work on the acclaimed Netflix series Russian Doll. According to reports about the series, it will be a more female-centric entry to the Star Wars lineup. The hiring of Headland and the casting of Stenberg show that this seems to be the direction they’re taking.

The Acolyte won’t be the only female-centric Star Wars series we’ll be getting in 2023. Fan-favorite character Ahsoka will be getting her own solo series in 2023 as well, with Rosario Dawson reprising her live-action version of the character. Ahsoka was introduced in the animated Star Wars: The Clone Wars and has been one of the most well-received characters in the post-Original trilogy Star Wars projects. Of course, The Acolyte and Ahsoka won’t be all we have to look forward to in the Star Wars universe. In fact, fans won’t have to wait very long at all for the next big series, as Andor is set to premiere in August. Andor follows Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor, who we met in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. We’ll also be getting the second season of the animated series The Bad Batch and the animated anthology Tales of the Jedi before the year is over.
