Like Marvel and DC, the Star Trek franchise has had its time to shine in the infamous Hall H at the San Diego Comic-Con, running this weekend from July 21 through July 24. One of the major Star Trek revelations came courtesy of the Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 trailer. The trailer revealed a pending return to Deep Space Nine.

Star Trek: Lower Decks follows the support crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos on their comical adventures through space in the comedy animated series on Paramount+. The rag-tag bunch of characters are seen in the season three trailer (see below) fighting a number of monsters and exploring several otherworldly locations as well as on the hunt to save Captain Freeman, following her untimely arrest in the climax of season 2. The end of the Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 trailer then reveals the U.S.S. Cerritos circling Deep Space Nine, the popular space station that serves as the central location for the television series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine was the first spin-off of the wildly popular Star Trek: The Next Generation that made its debut in 1993. The show focused on the previously mentioned Deep Space Nine space station, that orbits the planet, Bajor. Deep Space Nine, a space station under Federation ownership is protected by its Commander, Benjamin Sisko and his crew as several threats claim to seize the station given its attractive location, right next to a space-time hopping wormhole. The show ran for seven seasons and was a hit amongst critics, earning a Rotten Tomatoes score of 91% across all of the seven seasons amongst critics and an average audience score of 88%. Given it is one of the highest rated of the many series the world of Star Trek has to offer, the inclusion of the titular space station from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is a big deal for Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3

Here’s a closer look at the old station, as seen in the Lower Decks season 3 trailer…

They even showed us the Bajoran wormhole in a straight up homage to the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine opening credits. Below is the classic DS9 opening credit sequence for comparison…

As well as a Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 trailer being revealed at Star Trek’s Hall H SDCC panel, a huge Star Trek crossover event was also announced, with the news being made that the cast and characters of Lower Decks will be appearing in a live-action/animated episode in season two of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. More big news from the Star Trek panel came in the form of the trailer for the third season of Star Trek: Picardwhich revealed several cast members returning from Star Trek: The Next Generation. The trailer showed the likes of LaVar Burton reprising his role as Geordi LaForge, Jeri Ryan as Seven of Nine, Michelle Hurd as Raffi Musiker, Michal Dorn as Worf, Marina Sirtis as Deanna Troi, Johnathan Frakes as Will Riker, and Gates McFadden as Beverly Crusher. Check out the Picard season 3 trailer here.

Where the Star Trek: Picard trailer showed a huge swathe of returning characters from decades gone by, the Star Trek: Lower Decks Season 3 trailer had a more subtle call back with its Deep Space Nine flyby. It’s clear there is a lot for Trekkies to get excited about with Paramount’s upcoming Star Trek content, and it is all tied into a wave of nostalgia.
