Some actors just do better when they remain in one medium. Actors like Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt seem to flourish on the big screen but feel too large for the small screen. Then there are actors like David Boreanaz, who found his home on the small screen, but never took off in big screen roles. One of the biggest names in Hollywood is returning to the small screen for the first time in decades. Kurt Russell is the newest name to sign on to a new project on the small screen, expanding the monster universe that includes King Kong and Godzilla on AppleTV.

According to a new Deadline report, Kurt Russell and his son Wyatt have inked a new deal to star in the currently untitled Apple TV+ Godzilla and the Titans series. The agreement marks Russell’s first TV role since appearing in Hawaii Five-O way back in 1977. While it has been four and a half decades since his last TV appearance (not counting his voice being used in the animated Disney+ series,  Marvel’s What If…), he is no stranger to the small screen. The actor appeared in numerous series throughout the 70s, including GunsmokeThe Magical World of Disney, and The Quest. Once Snake Plissken hit the theaters in Escape from New York, Russell was a blockbuster star from then on.

The new series will exist and be a continuation of the same universe that began with Godzilla in 2014. Kong: Skull Island, Godzilla: King of the Monsters, and Godzilla vs. Kong continued the storyline and built a world at the mercy of the titans, an ancient collection of beasts and monsters primed to battle each other for superiority over the planet. While the details of the series and Kurt Russell’s role are being kept under wraps, what we do know is it will follow the story of a family discovering their legacy and connection to the villainous corporation, Monarch.

Kurt Russell is joined on the project by his son, Wyatt. The younger Russell is not treading into unfamiliar waters in either way with this role. He has starred alongside his father multiple times, once in 1996 for his acting debut as the orphan boy in Escape from LA and once playing the younger version of his father’s character, Todd, in Soldier. He is also no stranger to TV series, as he has appeared in Arrested DevelopmentBlack Mirror, and Lodge 49. While he currently appears with Andrew Garfield in Under the Banner of Heaven, he is most well known for his role as John Walker/U.S. Agent in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier

While all we have to go on so far is the vague synopsis and a few set photos, the addition of the Russell father/son team gives the series some clout that can provide the series some hype. Who knows how well a movie centered on a human family will do in a monster universe, but Kurt Russell is the kind of name that can carry something regardless of shortcomings.
