Director Steven Spielberg may be the most prolific filmmaker in cinematic history. From his feature-length directorial debut of 1971’s Duel to his iconic pop culture phenomenons Jurassic ParkE.T. the Extra-TerrestrialRaiders of the Lost ArkSchindler’s List, and Ready Player One, Spielberg has shown the world what modern filmmaking consists of. It’s almost as if he has taken on everything under the sun. Spielberg has tackled small screen projects as a producer, including the miniseries Band of BrothersInto the WestThe Pacific, and Animaniacs. One type of art that Spielberg has never attempted has been that of music videos, but it appears that the 75-year-old director is looking to change that as he thrust his talents to an even smaller screen this month.

According to a report by Deadline, Steven Spielberg has recently shot his first ever music video for Marcus Mumford. The video in question is for Mumford’s song “Cannibal,” a single recorded for his upcoming self-titled album due for release in September 2022. Spielberg chose to film the video using his cell phone, with his wife and actor Kate Capshaw standing in as producer, dolly grip, and art director on the shoot. Mumford is married to Promising Young Woman actor Carey Mulligan, who was also on set to care for costumes and sound. The musician shared the behind-the-scenes look at the music video on social media, which took place in a New York high school gym.

Per Marcus Mumford’s Instagram and Twitter posts today, Steven Spielberg was tapped to direct the music video for the single, which he apparently did in one shot. Mumford hails from the British rock band Mumford & Sons, along with Ted Dwane and Ben Lovett. This will be the first studio album for Mumford as a solo artist and will feature guest vocals from Phoebe Bridgers, Brandi Carlile, Clairo, and Monica Martin, according to Pitchfork. Mumford’s debut solo album will also include ten tracks, with “Cannibal” leading the pack. With Capshaw and Mulligan in tow, it appears that the legendary filmmaker and lead singer have made this music video shoot a family affair. You can see the result of Spielberg’s work below.

Marcus Mumford met Carey Mulligan when the two worked on the 2013 film Inside Llewyn Davis, directed by the Coen brothers. Since then, Mumford has lent his voice to several projects, most notably the opening theme song to the Apple TV+ hit comedy series, Ted Lasso. By contrast, Steven Spielberg met his wife of over thirty years, Kate Capshaw, when she was cast in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. Widely known for his influence on modern filmmaking, frequent collaborators, and visual methods, Spielberg will next be releasing The Fablemans on November 23, 2022. The Fablemans is a semi-autobiographical look at Spielberg’s early days growing up in Arizona and will star Michelle Williams, Seth Rogen, Paul Dano, Judd Hirsch, and Gabriel LaBelle.
