Sometimes it’s okay to turn back the clock and enjoy the past. That’s what Sofia Vergara did recently on Thursday, and we’re all the better for it. Tagging her post with “#tbt” for Throwback Thursday, Vergara posted lovely images from a photo shoot in which she appeared hugging herself in a blue, netted dress. You can see those photos below.
Sofia Vergara is likely still best remembered as Ed O’Neill’s younger, and much more patient, wife Gloria Delgado-Pritchett in the hit ABC sitcom Modern Family. The fan-favorite series ended on its own terms in 2020, bringing an end to a wonderful 11 year run. Vergara was nominated four times for the Primetime Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, though sadly never took the trophy home. Possibly adding a bit of insult to injury, on two occasions she lost the trophy to Modern Family co-star Julie Bowen.
The former sitcom star has more recently joined the panel of judges on NBC’s America’s Got Talent. She’s part of the current season, joining host Terry Crews and fellow judges Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, and Howie Mandell. The actress regularly posts behind the scenes shots to her Instagram.
Sofia Vergara’s next project looks to be about as far from either Modern Family or America’s Got Talent as you can get. The Machete Kills star is playing the title role in the upcoming Netflix mini-series Griselda. The show is based on the infamous Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco who, among other things, is known for coming up with the assassination technique of the motorcycle drive-by, which is how her own life came to an end at the age of 69. In spite of working in a drug trade otherwise dominated by men, Blanco developed a reputations for ruthlessness and mercilessness; enjoying such nicknames as the Cocaine Godmother and Black Widow. Vergara also serves as executive producer on the series. Along with Vergara, the series will star Alberto Guerra (Narcos: Mexico), Vanessa Ferlito (Death Proof), Alberto Ammann (The Longest Night), Christian Tappan (Wild District), Diego Trujillo (Proof of Life), Paulina Davila (The Deal) and more. No release date has been announced yet.
Hopefully a bold role like that of Griselda‘s lead will bring Sofia Vergara some much deserved acclaim. Particularly when it comes to the Modern Family star’s big screen efforts, reviews have been harsh. Take a quick trip to the actress’ Rotten Tomatoes page and you’ll note of all of her films, the only ones not awarded the dreaded green splat are Jon Favreau’s 2014 dramedy Chef and the 2019 sports drama Bottom of the 9th.
She may not be reviewers’ top choice, but apparently audiences beg to differ. While many of the audience scores on Rotten Tomatoes are just as bad or worse as those of the critics, clearly someone is seeing the stuff the actress makes. As part of their 2019 report on the most bankable actresses, Forbes named Vergara one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood and gave her the #1 spot in terms of television actresses. Between film and television, Vergara was topped only by Scarlett Johansson who, at the time, had yet to sic her lawyers on Disney and was still part of the MCU.
