The Star Wars franchise is currently experiencing yet another revival, as Lucasfilm executives realize the potential of the Disney+ streaming platform to launch new stories and characters without the need or expectations of a theatrical film. This necessarily requires them to bring in a whole bunch of actors to fill out The Mandalorian season three, Ahsoka, and all the rest. According to our trusted and proven sources, the Man Without Fear himself, Charlie Cox, is in talks for a role in Star Wars. While there is little detail as of yet who Charlie Cox could be playing in the rapidly expanding Star Wars universe, we are going to take a guess as say that he will be playing the fearsome bounty hunter Beilert Valance.
The first response to this would likely be: who is Beilert Valance and why should Charlie Cox play him in Star Wars? The first part is easy enough: Beilert Valance is a Star Wars Legend (ie, not currently canonical character) who started out at the Imperial Academy as a rival-turned-sometime friend to Han Solo, was horribly wounded and repaired with cybernetics in service to the empire, and turned into a feared bounty hunter. The character first appeared in a 2018 comic tie-in to the Alden Ehrenreich-starring Solo: A Star Wars Story, and has since appeared in a number of other comic books, including the Target Vader series and Bounty Hunters.
As to why Charlie Cox could be playing Beilert Valance in Star Wars, the former Imperial turned ruthless mercenary has been consistently portrayed as a rival of the Galaxy’s other ruthless bounty hunter and mercenary, Boba Fett. The first season of The Book of Boba Fett already featured a number of previously non-canonical characters like Cobb Vanth, Cad Bane, and the Wookie Krrsantan; the appearances by these characters were widely seen as some of the best parts of the mostly confusing and lifeless Disney+ show. So why not add in Charlie Cox as another bounty hunter from the gritty underworld of the Star Wars universe for Book of Boba Fett season two? It’s a no-brainer.
Charlie Cox would be ideal for the canonical Star Wars live-action Beilert Valance, given his previous experience playing brutal, yet human characters. As the breakout star of the Marvel Netflix shows (newly ported over to Disney+, despite the protests of fringe parental groups), Charlie Cox portrayed Matt Murdock as a tormented, violent, but ultimately heroic figure. He was also noted for his portrayal of a relentless killing machine of a mob enforcer/IRA hitman with an unexpected heart in the HBO series Boardwalk Empire. In short, Charlie Cox has a wealth of experience playing characters who are not afraid to get down in the gutter with the scum (sometimes literally), but somehow still manage to make them sympathetic to audiences. We certainly do hope that Lucasfilm can lock down Charlie Cox for a part in Star Wars, because we have been missing his trademark intensity and physicality. Beilert Valance, Lucasfilm: make it happen.
