Quentin Tarantino is the master of violent cinema and one of the greatest students of genre film that Hollywood has ever seen. He is of course the maestro behind the era-defining Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, so it is likely his new favorite tv show is of a similar ilk, The Boys perhaps, or a classic such as The Sopranos, could it be Game of Thrones? The answer according to MovieWeb is none of those, in fact, Quentin Tarintino’s new favorite television show is none other than Peppa Pig.

Yes, the British-created cartoon about Peppa the Pig and her family has caught the eye of Quentin Tarantino in what could be one of the most shocking revelations the iconic director has ever made. The MovieWeb scoop comes courtesy of Quentin Tarantino sitting down with Empire Magazine to discuss the virtues of Peppa Pig, along with Tarantino’s upcoming new podcast, The Video Archives Podcast. Tarantino spoke about how has been introducing his son Leo, who is just two years of age to the world of cinema, via Despicable Me 2 and the world of television, via Peppa Pig. Tarantino had strong and positive words about the British cartoon, saying; “I actually do like Peppa Pig; I watch it a lot. I’ll say it – Peppa Pig is the greatest British import of this decade.” The fact that shows like Doctor Who made their way stateside after being created in Britain make Tarantino’s designation of Peppa Pig one of almighty praise.

Peppa Pig was created by Nevill Astley and Mark Baker and debuted on British television in 2004. A report by British news outlet The Guardian in 2019 stated that at the time Peppa Pig had been sold to 118 territories with a yearly sales return of $1.3 billion, and there are theme parks in England, Florida, and Shanghai. Given that incredibly impressive expansion, perhaps Quentin Tarantino is on to something when it touts Peppa Pig as one of the best British Imports, but more important to a cinephile such as Tarantino is the quality of the show itself. When The Guardian asked Sarah Kennedy, an animation professor at the University of Central Lancashire about the show’s quality the reply was; “When I teach script structure, we look at Peppa Pig because it manages to get a simple three-act structure into a five-minute episode.”

So, the secret of Peppa Pig’s success is pure quality, so no surprise then that Quentin Tarantino has chosen to watch the show with his infant son. Perhaps then, Peppa Pig will feature prominently in The Video Archives Podcast, the other revelation that came from Empire’s sit-down with Tarantino and his friend and collaborator Roger Avary, the co-writer of Pulp FictionVariety reports that The Video Archives Podcast will debut on July 19. The podcast, hosted by Tarantino and Avery is being produced by SiriusXM-owned Stitcher and focuses on the two hosts watching and discussing VHS tapes pulled from the Video Archives movie rental store in Manhattan Beach, California, which amazingly the pair worked at together over four decades ago.

Podcasts and Peppa Pig aside, one of the biggest stories circling Quentin Tarantino is what will become of his tenth and reportedly final movie. It would appear the sad truth is that Tarantino’s next time in the director’s chair will indeed be his last, but the details of what this project will be are scarce, even Tarantino’s longtime muse Samuel L Jackson is unsure about the project, and doesn’t know if he will even be staring saying; “I don’t know. He’ll tell me or he won’t tell me. I didn’t hear from him at all when he did the Hollywood movie. Usually, he’ll call me and say he’s doing something and ask how I feel about it.” Perhaps the project will be a live-action three-hour Peppa Pig epic?
