Stargirl viewers have been left wondering what season 3 of the fan-favorite show entails ever since the season 2 finale teased the subtitle for the upcoming third season, “Frenemies.” Lead actress Brec Bassinger has gone a step to clue fans in as to what this all means, stating that the show is going to become a; “Murder mystery! And how evil and good are going to live in a town together and figure out who the murderer is.”

The exciting premise teased by Bassinger has also been met with a recent teaser trailer for Stargirl season 3, which The CW released last month. The trailer, which you can see below, shows the return of Joel McHale’s Sylvester Pemberton aka Starman, who Screenrant reports will be a season three regular. You can watch the trailer below.

Stargirl has had a rocky life on air in just its short history. The first season was a part of DC Universe’s streaming platform, but after DC Universe went the way of the dodo, Stargirl was left without a home. Luckily for fans of the series, the second season was picked up by The CW and the network remains the show’s home to this day after ensuring a renewal for the upcoming third season. Stargirl follows Brec Bassinger’s Courtney Whitmore, a high-school teen who takes on the hero mantle of Stargirl and leads a group of young heroes to form a new-fangled Justice Society of America, originally a comic-book DC superteam that predated the Justice League.

Stargirl has gone down a hit with critics with its first two seasons. Critical aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes chart’s the show’s overall score as 94%, with the second season having a unanimously positive approval rating of 100%. According to Variety, the show made a strong debut in 2020, premiering with 1.2 million viewers, and has continued to wow fans ever since.

Whilst The CW has made a success of Stargirl, thus greenlighting its renewal, the network has been brutally cutting other DC Comics adaptations for some time now. Batwoman received the axe after three seasons just two months ago and Legends of Tomorrow is also no more. More shows from the network’s other narrative worlds have also been getting the chop. Riverdale is set to come to an end after seven seasons and Tom Swift, part of the extended universe of Nancy Drew stories, received a brutal axing after just six episodes, despite being a fan-favorite.

So, with several fans of the countless shows in despair having seen their beloved shows go asunder, fans of Stargirl can look to the future with wide-eyed optimism ahead of the show’s third season. Stargirl’s viewers will also be keeping everything crossed that if the third season is another critical darling with decent audience numbers, then it will be safe from the continual purge at The CW.
