Production for Loki season 2 is underway and along with Tom Hiddleston reprising the eponymous role, Owen Wilson is returning as the TVA agent Mobius. Will we finally find out who he’s a variant of? Will they unveil the story behind his jet ski fascination? Will he finally, at least once, gives us a signature Owen Wilson “Wow?” We can’t answer any of those questions for you today, but we can show you the first images of Mobius to surface from the production of Loki‘s sophomore season.

The images starting circulating twitter over the July 4th weekend, with both Tom Hiddleston and Owen Wilson appearing in the photos dressed in formal wear. It isn’t clear why they’re dressed to the nines, but there are some interesting theories. You can see the images below.

One commenter on the tweet above speculates that the pair could be on the Titanic in the photos. There isn’t a lot to support that. In fact, some of the extras surrounding Owen Wilson and Tom Hiddleston seem to have some kind of electronic earpieces which you wouldn’t find in 1912. What may be more likely is that they’re at the theater. Over the same weekend, photos surfaced of London’s Noël Coward Theatre where part of season 2 is being filmed. The shots include posters of fictitious films made by Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo in last year’s Eternals, as well as films about the obscure Marvel characters the Phone Ranger and Zaniac. You can see those images below.

The photos don’t tell us a lot about Loki, but they do suggest at least one thing — that Tom Hiddleston’s Loki and Owen Wilson’s Mobius are working together once again; that wasn’t exactly a guarantee considering the way the inaugural season ended. Loki’s season 1 finale ends with Sylvie (Sophia Di Martino) murdering He Who Remains (Jonathan Majors), Marvel’s Multiverse breaking free from the Sacred Timeline, and Ravonna (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) disappearing to parts unknown. When Loki returns to the TVA, it’s a completely different place and Mobius has no idea who the Asgardian prince is or what he’s doing there.

One big question we’ll presumably learn the answer to early in season 2 of Loki is exactly what the purpose of the TVA is now. For most of season 1, Owen Wilson’s Mobius and the rest of the Time Variance Authority exists to stop Marvel’s Multiverse from being a multiverse. As soon as new timelines begin branching off from the so-called Sacred Timeline, those branching timelines and everyone in them are “pruned.” Now, with the Multiverse unleashed — leading to the events of What If…?, Spider-Man: No Way Home, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and no doubt more projects to come — what good is something like the TVA? Are they hoping to somehow unmake the Multiverse and bring everything back to just one timeline? Are they simply attempting to keep things more or less manageable by “pruning” the more post-apocalyptic timelines? Perhaps they’re trying to stop the Incursions — the catastrophic collisions of two or more timelines — that will ultimately lead to the MCU’s Secret Wars event?

There’s no firm word on when we’ll see Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, and the rest of the Loki season 2 cast back in action. But with filming happening now, there’s a good chance we can expect to see season 2 streaming on Disney+ some time in 2023. As soon as we hear firm word, we’ll let you know.
