Taron Egerton Met With Marvel About Wolverine, Our Scoop Confirmed
We called it, he confirmed it!
This article is more than 2 years old
Back in April, here at Giant Freakin Robot, we reported that a trusted and proven inside source had let us know that Taron Egerton of Kingsman fame was talking to Marvel. The Rocketman star has never been secretive about his interest in being the first post-Jackman actor to play a live-action Wolverine, and now the man himself has confirmed he’s in talks with Marvel.
According to Comic Book, Taron Egerton confirmed that he’s talked directly to Marvel about playing Logan, aka Wolverine, as we reported in April. Egerton talked about meeting while promoting his upcoming Apple TV+ series Black Bird. He said that Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige was there for the meeting, and confirmed that he’d “love to” play the role. Comic Book’s Chris Killian also made a point to discuss how the actor got “so jacked,” for Black Bird; perhaps implying it was, in fact, a more superheroic role Egerton had bulked up for.
Taron Egerton has long been one of the most often fan-cast actors to follow Hugh Jackman in the role of Wolverine. Fan artists have been giving their own renderings of what they think Egerton could look like as the next Logan. You can see one example, by the Internet artist Mizuriau, below.
Perhaps the only actor who experiences close to as much Wolverine fan-casting as Taron Egerton is the Boy Who Lived actor — Daniel Radcliffe. Unlike Egerton, Radcliffe has flat-out denied any kind of discussions with Marvel about playing Wolverine as well as cast doubt on the very idea the studio would choose him for the role. At the same time, however, he didn’t deny the notion sounded appealing. Speaking to Comic Book in March, Radcliffe said, “Like, I appreciate that somebody is clearly going like ‘Wolverine’s actually short in the comic books, you should get like a short guy to do it!’ But… I don’t see them going from Hugh Jackman to me. But who knows? Prove me wrong, Marvel.”
Of course, Taron Egerton hasn’t confirmed yet he’s been cast in the role of Wolverine, but with Marvel officially in talks with the actor, the possibility certainly seems closer. While it might prove presumptuous to say Marvel Studios has been laying the foundation for the mutants’ entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for years, they have been slowly adding more and more elements of the X-Men mythos — and even more specifically Wolverine’s mythos — ever since Disney+’s WandaVision. Sure, Evan Peters’ “Ralph Boehner” turned out to be a red herring. But then The Falcon and the Winter Soldier introduced the fictional city-state Madripoor. The criminal haven first appeared in The New Mutants comic, but it was in Wolverine’s first regular solo series that the locale first became infamous with comic book fans. Then, of course, there was Patrick Stewart’s cameo as a variant Professor X in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Not to mention, there was the often forgotten cameo by Olivier Richters as Ursa Major in last year’s Black Widow (though we never see him using any powers).
