Star Wars Originally Had Much Bigger Plans For Obi-Wan Kenobi
What would that have been like?
The Disney+ Obi-Wan Kenobi series recently wrapped up, but apparently, there was much more Obi-Wan story in store than what we got. The first season saw Obi-Wan come out of hiding to save a young Leia Organa. It also saw the former Jedi Master cross paths with the apprentice he thought he left for dead — Darth Vader. However, this would have just been the first part of the story if writer Stuart Beattie’s initial pitch would have been produced.
Beattie recounted to The Direct that he had pitched an Obi-Wan Kenobi trilogy of movies. The first movie was transformed into the series we got. Beattie further elaborated on what the second movie would focus on, detailing Obi-Wan’s journey of acceptance into the fact that he would eventually die and become a force ghost in A New Hope. While the series is supposedly wrapping after one season, the fact that more Obi-Wan story is out there is certainly promising and opens up the possibility that we will see Ewan McGregor return to the role and take us on more Obi-Wan-related adventures.
For what it’s worth, both Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen have expressed interest in Obi-Wan Kenobi Season 2. Getting the two big stars to return would certainly be an important piece of the puzzle, so this bodes well for those hoping to see another season. Hayden Christensen portrayed Anakin Skywalker in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series and filled the Darth Vader suit as James Earl Jones returned to provide the Sith Lord’s voice. Hayden Christensen has also expressed interest in a solo Darth Vader show. There’s an interesting Vader comic series that explores Vader’s time between Episode III and Episode IV that would provide prime material to adapt for the screen. The comic picks up immediately after Vader gets his suit at the end of Episode III. The comic series explored Vader building his red lightsaber and embracing the Dark Side and leaving the past behind. This would give us interesting insight into Anakin’s complete transformation into Vader.
While there’s no way of telling yet if Obi-Wan Kenobi will get a new season or if we’ll be seeing more of Darth Vader in his own series, there’s no slowing down Star Wars on Disney+ outside of these two characters. The upcoming series Andor is set to hit Disney+ in August and will follow Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor in the years before his fateful mission in Rogue One. The series has already been ordered to have two seasons with 12 episodes each. The second season of the animated series The Bad Batch is also set to hit the platform in September 2022. The solo Ahsoka Tano series is also set to hit the platform sometime in 2023. Of course, we’re also getting the third season of The Mandalorian in February of 2023. Other projects announced for 2023 and beyond include Skeleton Crew, The Acolyte, Rangers of the New Republic, A Droid Story, and a series that follows a young Lando Calrissian reprised by Donald Glover.
