Ewan McGregor Marvel

Ewan McGregor has made his fans across the world rejoice by returning to perhaps his most iconic role in Obi-Wan Kenobi, but it seems he is ready to move across the aisle to Disney’s other big franchise. According to our trusted and proven sources, Ewan McGregor has joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe and will be appearing in an upcoming project. Details of McGregor’s role in the MCU are still scarce, but we can probably narrow it down just by sifting through the announced Phase Four projects in the works.

It is worth noting that Ewan McGregor was reportedly up for joining Marvel before in the past and was the original choice to play Doctor Stephen Strange before Benedict Cumberbatch was cast as the once and future Sorcerer Supreme. Given that Disney owns both Marvel Studios and Lucasfilm, it seems that a hard choice had to be made of whether to utilize McGregor for Marvel or to reactivate him for Star Wars. However, apparently, enough time has passed that Ewan McGregor can share the Marvel wealth, even if Doctor Strange is now an established property. That does open the question of who McGregor will be playing in Marvel going forward.

The single most mysterious upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe project is undoubtedly Fantastic Four, which has been on the docket since it was first announced at the July 2019 San Diego Comic-Con. There are almost no confirmations on what is going on with the much-anticipated arrival of the First Family in the MCU proper, which makes it entirely possible that will be where Ewan McGregor lands in Marvel. John Krasinski popped up in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as Reed Richards, which would seem to take the obvious casting out of the running. However, it is unclear whether Krasinski will be playing the part in the film, given that he appeared as an alternate reality version of Mister Fantastic; that could leave things open for Ewan McGregor to be Marvel’s new grey-templed brainiac.

Of course, there are other options for Ewan McGregor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Disney+ series Secret Invasion will star Samuel L. Jackson in his return as Nick Fury/a Skrull masquerading as Nick Fury, but there is a lot of room for McGregor to be playing a role. We could very much see him playing a military commander role a la Martin Freeman in Black Panther, which could utilize McGregor’s charisma without tying him down to a single iconic role.

Ewan McGregor joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe will be a pretty big deal for everyone involved, but it will not be his first comic book role. He has already played a foppish version of Black Mask in 2020’s Birds of Prey (or Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) as it was overwhelmingly titled), which shows his ability to blend into a comic book world. Wherever and however he shows up in the MCU, we are certain he will bring some of that famous McGregor charm to the role.
